Be a proud BMW fan!!!

I went looking at Mercedes online forums the other day and I am really amazed at the difference in the quality and depth of our posts in comparison. E90post and bimmerfest are indepth and truely helpfull. Whereas the Mercedes posts I read seemed kind of..well useless.

I guess the bottomline is that Mercedes are great cars, but they don't seem to foster the same collective enthusiasm that BMW's affectionados have for their cars.

Agreed!
My wife has a current model C180K and as lovely as it is and so super reliable, I haven't had any interest in hopping onto a Merc online forum at all.

Cheers

I used to have a Mercedes and belonged to a forum. There were hardly any posts. You could miss a week and only spend 5 minutes catching up. Here, if you miss a day there are 100 new threads!

BMW and mercs are prestige executive marques, but i guess generally BMW drivers are more passionate drivers. In Singapore, mercs used to reign supreme. The W124 e class used to be the most popular car on the road for the 'towkays'/ businessman types. Merc popularity is waning today as seen by the sheer nos of e90 and e60 vehicles on our roads. not surprising that majority merc guys buy the merc for the badge and prestige only. Once they have tasted the beemer, i don't think many will return to mercs. i know many 'merc to bmw' converts, I for one had a merc 190 previously.

and another little point for BMW: I happened to catch the movie "taxi" on hbo the other day, and I found it pleasurably interesting that they used all bimmers for the getaway cars (piloted by eye candy) when they couldve used any manufacturer, for example the AMG line?
Of course its possible it may have been for some inside deal, but Im gonna stick to my belief that it was because they're sexy, exotic, and of course the ultimate driving machine.

I'm definitely enthusiastic about BMW...I mean whenever I see someone else with a bimmer in a parking lot or something, I'll give them a compliment.

People can say bad things about BMWs and drivers, but I think it's ok to say we all appreciate the true genius of BMW engineering, styling, and performance, We all like to talk about it, and we've all got that in common.

In then end, it's all about the market though. All of us here are more or less young (if we weren't and were in a different market segment, I doubt we'd be on the Internet at all, let alone a discussion forum). I could be wrong, but I doubt a 7 series forum is as active as this one for the three--not that only old people drive 7 series and only young drive 3, but you know what I mean.

Also don't forget that there are more 3-series sold than any other single BMW model. There are more of "us" e90 guys around to support such a forum.

*shrug* I use to be a mb owner and the popular MB forum
is at least 10x larger than this site with many more posts.

both many more technical stuff and useless stuff.

But this is a great starting forum and since the e90 hasnt been around for that long yet..

The AMG’s are not for ‘old’ people. Including the higher end AMG models (CL63 / S63 SL63), and especially the 612 bph $450,000 SLR supercar.

Whilst Mercedes has a reputation for older people, that is partially based on the fact that pre-1994 they probably made the best overall built car (as a company) in the world…stretching back to the beginning of the dawn of the automobile. They were the benchmark as a car company that others emulated (including BMW, which seems to have surpassed it in many regards, good job!). Thus, many of the ‘old’ people driving the cars remember with fond memories of how good a Mercedes was once upon a time. Think about 30-40 years from now, what the ‘old’ people will be driving then…maybe BMW (maybe Audi, Lexus, who knows?) will take MB’s place.

BTW, every car forum is the same, the BMW crowd rants on MB and Audi, the MB crowd rants on Audi and BMW, and the Audi crowd rants on BMW and MB. But, if you have respect for the 3 and see their good and bad sides, it will make car buying a much more informed process.

Jon.

Ha ha ha...I've thought about this many times. My grandfather still sticks with Cadillac because he remembers when Cadillac was the best of the best. It makes me wonder though, will BMW ever be an "old person's car" in like 30-40 years? That's a good question, but I think as long as BMW always thinks outside the box and constantly has new ideas and never has a "that's good enough" attitude, they'll always be on top. Of course, that's true for all brands.

For how popular American muscle cars were in the 60-70s, did you ever think the American car companies would end up in the position they are today?

I bet the average age of the owner of the cars you mentioned above is over 50. Of course, I would bet the same thing is true for the BMW M5. Not that younger people wouldn't love to drive those cars, but the cost is a little hard to swallow until you have built up some wealth.

You gotta figure that the majority MB owners are older and "sophisticated" . They wouldn't want to get their hands dirty touching their cars. They probably don't even wash their own cars.
What I have seen from hanging around E90Post and Audiworld, there are more resources, tuning options for these cars. Not many MB's are seen being tracked. The majority of German cars being raced on tracks are Audi, BMW, VW.

They certainly seem more critical (hate to use the word bashing ) of BMWs than we are of them (or other makes, a more civil bunch we are...). Check out this thread entitled "Top Gear names new BMW 3 series the Ugliest Car of the Year" ... http://www.mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=136759
