Destroyed my Stage 4 Clutch
So I have had a Clutch Master FX400 (Stage 4) clutch with aluminum flywheel on my car for the last 30,000 miles. Last week it died on me, and now I'm stuck with a hard decision. Part of me wants to go back to the stock dual-mass flywheel with a "performance" sachs clutch, but I also want to just get the same clutch again. Im making around 400whp and 430wtq with all wheel drive, and I daily the car. Has anyone had issues with a slightly upgraded clutch on the stock flywheel? Clutch masters kit is about $800, and the stock kit is around $300-400.

I'm not sure, I don't beat on the car everyday, but when I do I want it to hold.

A 6 puck clutch on a street car should never be advised. They are not designed for daily operation.
Get a slightly upgraded pressure plate setup than stock. Spec stage 2 will be street friendly, and hold anything you'll ever throw at it.

Will that handle occasionally launching the car?

At this point I'm leaning towards going stock for $200-300

I'm running Spec Stage 3+ with the OEM FW. Cars making around ~550wtq. Occasionally it slips when im roasting 2nd gear and slam it into 3rd but otherwise its fine. Ive done several 6th gear pulls without any issues. I also have a slight rear main seal leak which is probably part of the slippage problem.

Anyone know the limits of the stock clutch based on whp? Assuming I don't launch/dump clutch or bang gears often..

335is stock numbers are 320/370 (latter in overboost) but I imagine there might be some headroom there in that uprated clutch.
That stage 2 clutch mentioned earlier is probably your best bet. Gotta pay to play... |

I ordered in a stock clutch at work which only cost me around $300. I'm also waiting on a 550 clutch to show up, I might try to see if that will work with the N54, thinking it might have a heavier pressure plate, was only about $100 more. Glad it's tax return season

I don't know how you drove that 6 puck every day, my friend bought a gti that had that same clutch and it was abysmal to drive in traffic.

I'm still on the stock clutch, no problems here at all. I only run E30 over the summer months, and switch back to map 2/93 octane in the fall/winter, but I can't imagine I am pushing the limits. Note: I do not launch my car, that would surely toast the stock clutch.
I understand the 335is/550 clutch is more robust and should handle your power without any question.

That will definitely help longevity but these cars tend to kill clutches during high load, low rpm pulls like flooring it in 4, 5, or 6 from like 2-3000rpm. Ive had the stock clutch go out at 380whp on my other 335i. I love the stage 3+ for DD since its not a puck design and the engagement is phenomenal, there's never any hesitation but it does take a couple weeks to really get the hang of the engagement point.

UPDATE: I ended up installing a stock clutch kit for the 550. I figured being that it comes stock with more TQ (from the V8) and a greater curb weight, it should have stronger pressure plate springs. I plan to go back to a single mass flywheel, with a spec stage 2+/3 clutch kit in the future, maybe when I go single turbo

Tiny bit of slipping at the very top end, but otherwise unnoticeable. |
