That is dependant on the state. In MD, you pay 5% on the sale price of the vehicle, not 5% per month or 5% on what you are actually financing in the lease. But at least we don't have a personal property tax, or anything like that.

Illinois state sales tax is 6.25%, but in certain "metropolitan" counties, there are additional county and local sales taxes added. In my specific location I paid 7.75%.

Ever wondered why UK car owners complain about the price of new cars. In the UK, there is such a thing as car tax, this is a tax payable on all new cars and it is 10% of the manufacturers recommended price (including the cost of any options) less the dealer discount. Added to the total cost including car tax is 17.5% VAT (sales tax).

As an example, a 330i with no options would cost:

22,135 MRP less approx 8% dealer margin = 20,364
Car tax at 10% of MRP less dealer margin = 2,036 added to MRP = 24,171
plus VAT at 17.5% = 4,230 = 28,401 plus 745 on the road charges = 29,145

Total tax payable = 6,266 or about $10,800. Ouch!

In Holland, as I mentioned in other topics, we have 45% BPM and 19% BTW VAT). To give an example:

318i, basic model, 33,800 incl. taxes = 21,400 netprice + 8,100BPM + 4,100VAT. Which is roughly $43,000...

I believe the folks over in the state of Oregon pays 0% sales tax ... Oregon is one of just five states without a sales tax: Montana, Alaska, Delaware and New Hampshire are the others. Sweet

I paid 8.25% tax for registering in Orange County, NY (it would have been even higher if I was still living in NYC).

Wyoming 6% of Sale Price minus amount dealer gives you for trade in vehicle.

I'm in the USAF too, TN is my home of record for no state tax, I know a lot of people are putting Oregon as HOR so they can register vehicles and not pay tax and so on. Don't forget to write your taxes off your federal return next year too.
