icon of "gear" showing on map. what is it?

So I tried doing a search and quite frankly I'm not even sure what to searh for and I couldn't find anything in the manual so hopefully someone can help me out. I just recently noticed, what i thought were POI icons but are not, on my navigation map. They look like little "gears" and they seem to be all over the place at some of the most random spots. Again, I thought maybe I somehow marked "restaurants" or "ATM" as POI but they were at such random spots, I figured that couldn't have been the case and besides, I didn't think the BMW system was capable of marking POIs.

Can anyone help me with what they little "gears" represent?

Yea as far as I know the nav system doesn't mark POI. I have not been able to figure that out.

Any way you can take a pic of the gear?

POI can be shown on the map if you use the "information" section to do a search for one. That said, I don't know what the gears are - maybe service centers?

Different icons are used for different categories.

Fork and knife for restaurants, little train cars for train/metro stations, etc.

The little gears must be a certain category you selected.
If at first you don't succeed, failure may be your style.

iDrive is capable of mapping POIs, and what you're seeing on the screen are the POIs for the last category of destiantion you searched for. If you want to turn them off, select "Hide Map Icons" from the Nav screen.
