Am i missing something here? (wheel alignment prices)

Ok i've had my wheel alignment done at a local Beaurepaires for $75 (4-wheel alignment).

that's ok but i'm still having a slight pulling issue so i thought i'd check with an independent BMW specialist near the city.

they quoted me for $95. fair enough BMW specialists deal specifically with BMWs and will probably have the proper numbers for the alignment.

then i called my dealer at Canterbury.

$300!!!! and with a free wheel cleaner!!!

geez that's a little bit overpriced isn't it???

The car should steer slightly left, just so you know.

i know that it should steer slightly left on roads where the camber slopes to the left, but what about completely flat roads?

maybe it is normal then... i dont know. when i'm going slow (0-40) it's fine. the moment i pick up speed i notice the pull. maybe it's my 19s?

After 5,000klms on my 19's, my steering is still spot on. No pulling to either side. What tyre pressure are you running (should be around 36 PSI). Maybe one is running a bit low and giving the feeling of pulling.

Yeah it shouldn't pull one way with higher speed. Or rather not noticeably.

It wouldn't be your wheels, have you hit a pot hole or something since the alignment?

If you get stuck go and see Steve Boulden at Bob Jane Haberfield, he looks after all my cars and I've put a number of mates onto him and everyone has always been more than happy with his team. They know Euro cars in and out and do all Rick Damilions cars and have a number of clients who do Targa and high level club motorsport.

So that you don't run into oncomming traffic if you have a lapse in concentration... this is the Oz forum, we drive on the other side of the road, in the US your car is probably set to pull slightly to the right.

OMG, $300 is over the top, especially as they probably sub it out. Adelaide motors charge about $95, but I go to the Bob Janes that they sub it out to and get the same service.

Some dealerships astound me how they think that just because it has a BMW logo, mugs like us have left behind any sense of value.

I think it would be wise to take it to a Bob Jane outlet. Paying $300 is outragious. I'm sure they quoted that price to discourage you as they didn't really want to do it. I wasn't 100% happy with my allignment when I purchased my car and within 1000klms I had it in to Bob Jane who fixed it right up.

And I thought Mercedes charging 177 for wheel alignment was bad, I thought BM would be better than that.

Why do you guys go to the dealer for an alignment???

Just take it to the tyre shop, and you will pay about $70 - $85

Bob Jane have done all my cars, and have never had a problem.

Personally I would take it back to where you had it originally done and tell them to fix it!

that's the thing... i've brought it back before and the guy's told me that it's the 19's that are causing the car to tramline and therefore give the sensation of pulling.

the reason why i'm looking for somewhere else is because this particular beaurepaires don't seem to get a lot of european cars. maybe it's because i live in Rockdale but all i see there are utes and holdens.

that's why i'm considering a proper bmw specialist as they would have the proper alignment figures to do a proper job - even if it costs me an extra $100.

i only called the dealer because i thought they'd quote me about the same price - and i could ask for a loaner too.

that being said i'll either try out bob jane or Sydney Prestige which are in surry hills (near my workplace) who specialise in most german luxury cars

There are differences in tyres but my 19's dont tramline whatsoever (Falken 452). The 17" Bridgestone runflats I had on there bere deffinitly tramlined. Andrew ... take it somewhere a bit more specialised to get it re-alligned. Maybe even a someone like a Pedders shop wo would check out the suspension area and advise if something wasn't right.

Definitely the run flats tramline - and badly. That is why mine got trashed and proper tyres put on.

the car is relatively new ... any reason why you felt it needed alignment? might have made sense bringing it back to the dealership in the first place to get them sort this out ...

I have failed to find a good wheel allignment/balance tyre shop in Melbourne.

My previous cars I have tried 4 different shops over time and they never do a good job. When I return the same day and say the wheels need another balance they blame everything else possible.

I really hope my new car won't need a balance/allignment anytime soon, as I don't want to go through this process again. Let alone letting these fools into my car

Give James at Pedders in Mascot/ Botany a call. He installed my Pss9's and does a lot of work for a mates race car. Also he has done a couple of Bathursts so isn't a BS artist. Top guy, knows his crap and does not charge like a wounded bull just cause it's euro.
