old version of TPM works very good.

I was impressed by the accuracy of the old passive version of the TPMS my e90 has. I got the warning light this morning and looked at all 4 wheels and tirers and they all looked fine. I checked the pressure and the right front was 3lbs off and the system picked it right up. just thought I'd share my experience.

Old system is indirect, using ABS system to detect speed differentials among the 4 wheels/tires.
New system is direct, with individual sensors on each wheel that sends a reading to the OBC.
Advantage of the new system, it tells you which tire is low pressure.
Old system advantage, no need for expensive sensors. (for example for a second set of wheels/tires) It also seems to be fairly accurate.

Another advantage of the old system -- FTM is not triggered because of a cold morning (all tire pressures a couple of pounds lower). With TPMS, the alert is triggered. Or maybe this is a disadvantage. At least, it's a difference.

EDIT - can anyone in the EU confirm -- I thought even the new cars in the EU had the "old" FTM system, rather than the sensors of the "new" TPMS system? I thought the air pressure sensors were used in the US only because of US regulations. I'll look for the old thread on this topic...

EDIT #2 - here you go: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55845

To paraphrase E90Fleet, the new system is the less advanced system, but it is required by US DOT. The old system is the more advanced system, but it is not allowed in the US since 2007.

I read this too, but can't confirm. However my boss has the sensors on his A8 - so I can at least say Audis have the sensors (and he had to buy a second set for his winter tires). Even his spare has to have a sensor....oh....to have a spare and a place to put it....how nice.
