Clicking and clunking transmission (auto)

MY car i have noticed on flat surfaces, engine on and in park that if you press the brake pedal and release and re-apply it clicks thruough the gear stick?!

wtf?? does sound like anything is breaking but ive noticed it a few times now?

anyone else found this? if not try it see if it does.


the more concerning one is when i park on a gradient, a relatively steepish graident in park and press the button to put into reverse etc it clunks quite hard going in, but only happens on gradients. Do they all do this?

When you press the brake pedal it'll probably just be activating a solenoid - which will prevent you from moving from neutral to D without first pressing the brake pedal. Same for starting.

Moving out of P on a gradient, it has to release the internal gearbox lock. All automatics can experience that. Do you use your hand brake too ?

All normal.

When you say hand brake, use it for what? parking?

Yes i do use it when parked on a gradient and it still clunks into gear when i take out of park, altho you rekon this is normal behaviour?

Just never noticed it a year ago when near, noticed it prob last 3 months because its made me worry!

The click is the shift interlock as it is released when depressing the brake pedal. The clunk is the transmission lock (gear) disengaging. This is most likely to happen when the handbrake is not in use of put on after the car has rolled 'onto' the transmission gear lock. This will always cause a clunk and happens on all automatics. So don't worry about it.

I would echo the above.. try parking on a hill (nose downhill) and release the hand brake with car in P.. it will roll a couple of inches and hit the transmission lock.. now put it into N or D and you'll hear a big clunk as above..

To avoid the above pull your hand brake on a bit harder when stopping/parking
