Is the Clutch knackered ?

Hi all,

In my quest to find the right car I test drove a 330d at a local car supermarket. It had done 27,000 miles is 20 months old and is very well priced (e.g. 20K)

When moving off the car juddered a few times before getting going. I put this down to my unfamiliarity with the car. At speed there was no issue in changing gears. A few miles down the road at a roundabout same thing happened.

Could this actually be a warped clutch plate or flywheel ?

If so how do you check ?

Many thanks,

Gordon

BMW clutches seem to be very prone to warping and thus causing clutch judder on lift-off in first gear. It is especially noticeable when starting off from a steep incline.
I have had to get two clutches replaced in the past (under warranty thankfully as both cars had less than 15K miles when it happened) - My E46 330d sport and my wife's 120d sport.

Both car's were remapped/tuning-boxed though, so maybe the extra power thru the transmission was too much for the clutches.

We had some clutch judder on the 120d. It was there from when we bought the car with 7K on the clock.

I sort of cured it though when reversing a very big 4 wheel trailer up a very steep incline. The clutch started to smoke so I stopped the car. It smelt a bit off for a couple of days but now the clutch is perfect and the car is showing 25K on the clock.

Regards

Chris

That reminds me of the old saying.....

'If you don't like the tool you are working with...... Break it!!'
