Repost: Service info indicator

I wasn't getting too many views in the engine thread, just thought I'd post here to get a quick answer. I tried a search and couldn't find anything.

I wanted to ask, my service interval indicator shows 15,000 miles till service, but I've already driven 1800 miles. Is this a bug in the OBC, or will the OBC adjust the 15,000 mile interval as it sees fit? Wouldn't you think that the 15,000 miles would count down the more you drive?

Actually don't quote me on it, but I think that's actually at 15K not that you have 15K to go. It's really confusing and not clear.
Now that I've driven the car a bit and am over 6K miles, the counter has counted down from 15K to 14K and is now showing service due at 13K miles.

Either way, showing the service due or miles to service, shouldn't it be simple math between what you have driven and miles till recommended service? I think I read somewhere that it depends on how you drive. The harder you drive, the more likely the OBC will move up your service date/mileage. I mean, afterall, no two drivers are alike. Just crazy it knows this.

Yes, the service indicators are adaptive. They flucuates according to driving style and wear conditions. I am pretty positive that the milage shown is the count down to service. Don't worry, everything is fine.

The milage shown is a count down to your next service. IE when it gets to 0, you need to service the car.

It is adaptive, the car has oil quality sensors etc and also calculates wear on the engine related to your fuel consumption. It is an estimate, and doesn't correlate exactly to the milage travelled.

When I had 6000km's on my 320d, it said 14000km till my next service. I thought no way my DIESEL is going to get 20 000km's on it's first bit of oil! Well, as I drove - the service interval indicator became more accurate. It's now on 1100km's till my next service, and my milage is around 13800...meaning my car will get it's service close to 15 000km's as "planned"

:-)

Don't stress about it...

The Service indicators count down to the required service. They do it in relatively coarse increments (1000mi initially) and may take far longer than that to make the first change.

Towards the service requirement the coundown interval reduces appropriately.

It is a best guess at the distance left before service is due, and will adapt to the way the vehicle is used.

Broken1, do they have different service schedules in SA because of the environment or something? My 320d initally projected 19000mi to the first oil service and now with 2250mi on the clock, it's saying 18000.

My 318d (less than 500 miles on the clock) is also currently projecting 19000 miles until next service.

It must be. My 320d projected 15 000km's when I got it, it went up to 16000km's for a short while, and now it's at 1000km's and I've got just under 14 000km's on the odo.

It might be due to the different climate conditions, or the different conditions of out diesels.

It's interesting you say yours was on 19 000mi? The PETROL engines (which should have a longer service life) are only "supposed" to last 15 000miles? Here, petrol model service intervals around around 25 000km's...

It was the same for my previous car, which was a 2002 1.9TDi Golf. I only had the car for about 7 months (company car) but it had been serviced in
arch 2005 some point in the year before I got it, and was not due another service until March 2007 (2 years) or 18000 miles.

My Petrol car needed 1 year (10000 mile) servicing.

I'm not complaining, but I dont pay for my servicing anyway, just means I am without the car less often.

This is really interesting :-)

I wonder why your diesels have LONGER service intervals than petrol models, while ours have shorter...

I alway thought that diesels needed to be serviced more often then petrols too.

it is indeed a countdown, and you have to drive a few more miles before it changes at all

mine stayed at 17000 miles to service until I had about 4000 miles on the clock, then it started counting down

There are several threads on this topic. Try Search.

It's a countdown. The BC takes into account fuel consumption in its calculation. Presently my car is heading to a 20000 mi change interval with a predicted date of Aug 2007. However the dealership will change it on it's 12 month anniversary in Sept of this year.

I think ours is a little sooner to be safe due to the hot climate.

But I really thik it being optimistic at 19,000mi, it will probably drop down quite a bit as soon as the indicator starts counting down

I'm a bit concerned about mine. I have a Euro 325i that's done 6900 miles, almost all town driving. It's still saying i've got 15000 miles left before it needs the oil changed. It's been at 16000 since new last year until about 400 miles ago, but surely it should be dropping faster than that?

How does one go bankcrupt? Slowly...then suddenly.

How does your Service Interval Indicator drop? Slowly, then suddenly. (-: Give it time, it's condition based and knows what it's doing!

I would worry when you are closer to 14000miles if it's still very high. Mine only really started dropping when I was at about 7-8000km's, now it's seemingly more accurate the closer I get to my service

My 320d indicated 30,000kms exactly to the 1st service when I picked it up.

Right now I have 4000kms on the car and it says I now have 31,000 to go so it has actually increased to 1st service @ 35,000kms based on my driving style.

I too am very curious why South Africa defaults to half the initial reading that we see in the EU. I think your theory about diesel quality might have something to do with it.

Do you know E90Fleet?

So is South Africa the only country where the 320d starts at 15,000kms?

Sounds like most EU countries start at 30,000kms (including hot ones like Turkey).

Here as well. Mine started out that way, went up to 26,000 then started to drop slowly. I've got around 12500kms on the clock with around 18,000 to go, so who knows how it will pan out.

What a wonderful car.
