Brake dust? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

Does anyone have problems with brake dust?
if so, have you installed those covers to protect the wheels from
getting all the dust?

Don't get the covers, they trap heat in your rotors. Better solution is to apply wax or similiar to your rims and clean them often.

Or maybe look into a different pad compound that doesn't dust as much.

its part and parcel of BMW ownership..I've come to accept it. Don't let the first few hundred miles bother you, they put out a lot of dust as the pad settles in. Wheel wax is a great idea or just hose it off at least once a week...

These cars put out an unbelievable amount of brake dust. After washing my car, my wheels are covered with dust within 20-50 miles of driving.

I put a coat of Klasse AIO and SG on my wheels with good results. I can simply wipe them down with a dry towel and they are like new again.

i will be changing my pads within the first week of ownership... done on M3 & X5. i use "rotex gold" dust-free pads. no squeaking and 95% dust free imo. the pads are the same as the e46 M3 front & rear.

the dealer knows i use them and is ok with it (really depends upon dealer). heck... they even replaced my rotors on my X5 once under warranty.

Used some wheel sealant (Poor Boys actually) and it has REALLY reduced the amount of brake dust that actually settles on the rims. Any that does comes off rather easy with just some water and a little wipe...

my e90 has about 11,000 miles on it and my brake dust isnt too bad ne more. it was bad tho when i first got the car. i usually wash my car every other day so the brake dust doesnt get too bad

I assume the aftermarket brakes have wear sensors--at least, they did on VWs.

Are the wear sensors on the E90s wires that touch the rotor and complete a circuit when the pad is worn (and the CBS just guesstimates a mileage based on brake usage)? Or do they incorporate a more advanced sensor?

How does the use of aftermarket pads affect the CBS calculations?

aftermarket pads have the same sensor as stock pads, the sensor isn't a part of the pad but instead it's a separate item that snaps into the pad

it's a wire loop, the when worn down enough the wire wears through and breaks as the pad becomes low once the wire's broken the light turns on

not sure about the miles left calculations the computer makes though??

I bought a set of disc brake covers thinking I could reduce the dust from accumulating on the rims but the dealer told me that it would add additional road noise and possibly overheat the rotors. The manufacturer of these covers claims that they have a patented design that allows the heat to escape through the vents. Since the run flats are already noisy, I felt I didn't need anymore noise coming from the rotors and that was that. If you are interested in the covers, I have them for sale and they are brand new. I had the dealer put on Xzilon clear coat protectant on the car, he also put them on the wheels and that has helped reduce the brake dust buildup. A suggestion would be to replace the existing brake pads with ceramic pads. They are suppose to last longer and lowers the dust output.
