WTF. 14K miles and the tires are "coned"

I did a lease assumption just over a month ago on an '07 335 E90. it had 12K miles on it and was in pristine condition, the seller was an older businessman.

as of about 2-3 weeks ago, I've noticed a rotational noise coming primarily from the front of the car at low speeds (under 30MPH). It sounded almost like a warped rotor.

So today I took the car in to get serviced, oil change, and mentioned the noise.

Just got a call from the service department, and the service guy tells me that the issue i s that my tires are coned, all four are worn heavily on the edges. there is still a decent amount of tread in the center.

He said that these tires typically last 20-24K miles (Sport Package 18") and that I should look to replace them fairly soon (currently @ 14.7K miles)

I'm not a happy camper right now.

Thoughts?

Shoulder wear is caused by cornering hard or not properly inflating the tires. You sure he didn't autocross weekly?

Yep. What tire pressure are you running on a daily basis? Also, if it's actually rough on the inner or outer edge you might be experiencing feathering from a bad toe alignment.

I've only had the car for a little over a month and honestly I haven't checked the tire pressure.

oh well, live and learn... now it's time to find a replacement set of tires

Are these legit?

I think that response about the alignment was just armchair QB stuff. I am the original owner of my E92 335 and at 6100 I notice the fronts are not wearing evenly. Who knows what the cause is. As far as I know, last time I checked my pressure I set them to what was on the door using a dial gauge.

My front tires were wearing unevenly and were replaced by the dealership at 6K. I got an alignment done afterwards, just as a precaution and so far all the tires are wearing well. The alignment guy told me dealership usually have relaxed align specs. for new cars out of the factory. Not sure if that is true...

Wear depends heavily on driving style, as they like to say at the tire store. But fwiw, I have 14k miles and rears are past wear bars and fronts have at least 6mm left in the center (not to bars yet) but shoulders are well worn. I drive aggressively and have had some track time (only 3 days) and keep pressures adjusted regularly. Track time chews shoulders up very quickly. If all 4 of yours have the same wear pattern on the shoulders, autoX or track days are a real possibility.

OP - is the wear on the outside or inside part of the tread?

Outside - real hard driving / alignment way out of whack (positive camber)
To do: check alignment at local shop. stats should be close to neutral toe and slight negative camber. If this is fine, just replace tires as the original driver drove aggressively.

Inside - too aggressive negative camber and/or too much toe.
To do - reduce negative camber and/or reduce toe towards 0.

both cases, run on the higher side of the tire pressures to reduce wear.
