6FL Cable -- the only one that worked ....

I ordered my E92 with USB, and was hoping to enjoy the ipod, but when i picked up the car there was no cable. So i used my ipod to usb cable that came from apple. It sounded great, but my lists, artists, etc., didnt work-- all i got on the NAv screen was "f01, f02,f03, stc." which looked like file folders, and in each were 15 or 20 arbitrary songs, sometimes spelled in jiberish.
So i tolerated this ( i live in Canada, and we have to pay for the 6fl cable-- $97). Anyway, i decided to bite the bullet, and buy the cable (although i was apprehensive, because my ipod is an old gen 3 ((20 Gb, monochromatic screen).

When the cable arrived this morning i tried it out-- it works perfectly-- 100% full functionality thru idrive.

For the record, the part# is 61-12-0-440-812 CABLE ADAPTER FOR IPOD.

It charges my ipod when the car is turned on too...

Part of me wants to rip the cable apart to get a schematic for everyone, but I'm too thrifty (read: cheap).

I think the car sees the iPod as a flash drive and not an iPod when you use the iPod cable that comes with it.
When you use the BMW cable it sees it as an iPod and then makes the id tags work.

Yes, this is one of the many infuriating rip-offs that BMW Canada perpetrates on it's customers. (There are many more, but we'll leave those for now). I expressed this annoyance to my Salesperson when buying my car and they have agreed to 'give' me one when my 335i comes in (soon I hope).

Remember that you pay $50 less for the option than we pay in the US. $97 sounds high for the cable, however. My impression has been that it can be had for more like $60 if you shop around which would make it almost even.

I just made a new thread about this. I may have found an alternate solution to this problem. Kenwood makes a similar cable for about $20 that you can buy at Crutchfield.

Do you have a link or part # for the item. I checked Crutchfield and could not find it.
