Windshield needs replacing

Anybody replace their windshield recently? I got a quote from a dealer for $1k+, which seems pretty steep. Geico recommended another shop to me that'll do it for $4xx with BMW OEM glass that they'll order from the dealership. I have a $500 deductible, but Geico told me that if I get it repaired at the dealer, they may not cover everything above the $500 due to the fact that there are charges they think aren't necessary. What have your experiences been? The shop that does it for $4xx says that the dealerships don't usually do their own glass work anyway and that they contract out the work.

Have you had experience on their work? I basically don't want a messy job that'll cause me to have leaks and such.

I was driving from Toronto to Montreal a few months ago and caught a rock in the bottom part of the windshield. It started to spread, and I decided that it's getting too dangerous to leave it.

Ok, I'll give safelite a call. They actually did the repair on the chip, but it started spreading. Not their fault, because the chip had already started to expand. They advised that I get a new windshield anyway, but I was just trying to put it off. With your OEM windshield, does it have the BMW roundel on it? Or is it more of a generic Pilkington one?

Statefarm will cover it once a year or something like that for only $100 out of pocket to the glass installer. Even if your Deductable is like 500 bucks.

Gieco nickle and dimes you!

Statefarm

Cool, I actually called safelite today and told them to order a windshield with the roundel on it. They're going to come next week to replace the windshield. I'll give an update on how it goes afterwards!

FYI, most dealerships farm out autoglass work. so they pay the outside contractor, then mark it up, and charge you.

i wouldnt worry about safelite, their only business is windshields, they probably do many times more replacements than an average bmw dealer

+1, most dealerships dont do enough winshield glass replacements that they are experienced or have a technician that does it.

companies like safelite only do windshields. i wouldnt be surprised if some dealers outsource to them or their installers.

Hassel BMW did...they offed their glass guy and made us all learn how to do it.

It payed shit too...you could never really get a good time down doing it, without messing it up somehow.

Dealers doing their own glass replacement is a growing segment of their business. Most dealers charge more labor for the job, but if it's done poorly, then it's covered. If safelite does it, good luck getting them to fix a wind/water leak.

Just to give you guys an update... I had my windshield replaced by safelite last week. So far, so good. I can't comment on quality of work as it hasn't rained while I've driven the car yet. It doesn't look EXACTLY like it did from the factory, but it's really close and most people probably won't be able to tell the difference. The glass was purchased through the BMW dealership, so it has the roundel on it and everything. The blue visor at the top of the windshield is now a grey, which I don't really mind. Safelite does warranty their work, and I don't get the feeling that they'd shrug me off. All in all, I'd give it a 9/10.

I just had my front windshield replaced on Tuesday (same day big rock cracked it in half ) by a local company in town other than safelite, but they were a USAA recommended repair shop, so they warranty their work for the lifetime of the car. Plus, no deductible required for glass, zero out of pocket! IMHO, it looks great. It's been raining since Thursday and I've left my car outside the garage to make sure there are no leaks, so far so good.

They did not use OEM, but I really can't tell the difference and I am happy with the job.
