335i - change spark plugs after 16000 miles

Thus I wanted to check my spark plugs after 16000 miles ( all with PROcede V1, PROcede V2, JB2H and new AA Active Processor ) I bought a new set and exchanged them today.

What you need:

Spark plug socket BMW 121220 ( Hazet )
Torque wrench 23 NM
Hex wrench 5 mm
6 spark plugs BMW 12 12 0 034 087



Procedure:

1) Engine should be cold
2) Remove the microfilter
3) Remove the cowling
4) Remove the 4 hex screws of the engine cover
5) Remove the engine cover

Now it looks like this ( you see the front part of the engine, cylinder 1-3 ):



6) Release the tab from the coil:



7) Unplug the coil:



8) Pull out the coil:





9) Remove the spark plug:



10) Install new spark plug ( 23 NM !!! )
11) Re-insert coil and press it down
12) Reconnect the coil to it's plug ( tab is open )
13) Close the tab
14) Press down the coil once again so that it does not stick out further than the others
15) Do this for every spark plug
16) Start the engine and make sure it runs smooth, turn it off again
17) Put on the engine cover
18) Put on the cowling
19) Put on the microfilter

Done.

This is a brand-new spark plug:



After 16000 miles, all of them with piggyback tunings, using Shell V-power gas only ( 95.5 octane AKI = 100 octane RON ) my spark plugs look like this:



No visible wear, color grey, spark plugs of cylinder 5 + 6 don't look different ( cylinder 1-6 from left to right ). IMO I changed too early, but this is good to know.

Looks good to me.

Yeah your old spark plugs look good,I was gonna change mine too but they looked fine. I showed the #6 spark plug to one of the BMW tech here in town just to be on the safe side He also taught it'd be a waste of money to change em now.He told me to save em for 50kmiles.

nice instruction.. dude they have 23MM torque wrench build in. just twisted them . listen for the click. there u go u are done.. lol

Really ? Never heard about this. Modern times ... . They should stay away from such gimmicks and make the spark plugs cheaper, IMO.

Excellent write-up Eugen! Thanks for taking the time to post this up.

Your plugs look perfect IMO. I use to change my plugs in my turbo s2k every 3,000 miles so I have seen quite a few plugs that were either too rich or too lean, but yours look fine.

So theres no need to torque the spark plugs to a specific amount? Just tighten them in until you hear/feel a click?

Boost Nation: The socket from Tischer BMW does not have a built in torque setting, so you still need a torque wrench. There is a more expensive option available listed below that has a preset torque setting for spark plug changes (from Turner Motor Sports)

N52/N54 Spark Plug Torque Adpater Tool

Applications: 2006 - - (E90 E91 E92 E93 E60 E61 X3 X5 Z4)
This Genuine BMW tool is purpose built for torquing the spark plugs on the N52 and N54 engine to precisely the right torque spec. This ensures you will not over or under tighten the spark plugs on the E90/E92 3 series or 2006+ E60 5 series 6 cylinder engine.

This adapter has standard 3/8" drive receivers on it, so you can use it in line with the BMW spark plug socket (part# 83300495560) and tighten until you hear the "click", which lets you know you have applied just the right amount of torque (23nm).

there is a bmw tool have already build torque setting for tighen the spark plug.


I believe this is bmw oem special tools 12 1 172

I ask my dealer and they told me that they will change the sparks plug at 60k miles ( I have 46k I think that's crazy I going to order the set and change them

Instead of spending $140 on a tool that will toque itself, I'll just spend $10 on a normal torque wrench and just set it to 17 lb ft of torque, which is the equivalent of 23 newton meters.

10 bucks on a normal torque wrench is a waste of 10 bucks. Unless you are willing to spend real money on a real torque wrench, use your elbow.

For me, I will rely on my Snap-On torque wrench for this. Although I am looking at another 100K km before I touch the plugs on my car since I have an N52 with no aftermarket tuning.

17 lb ft of torque, thanks, I was waiting for someone to convert this for me

What engine N52 or N54 do I have if I have an 2006 e90 330i? I can believe I have over 60K miles and i don't even know what engine I have

I need to change my spark plug and I don't wanna take my mods out so I took it to a shop where they have fix many BMW's and also building a E90 race car. Anyway long story short, he broke 2 coils while try to pull them out. luckly close by dealership had few coil in stock and was able to do it under warranty. So I will be more careful when you DIY this. Make sure you call your dealer and make sure they have coils in stock or else you gonna stuck when you have one or more coil break on you. Here is the picture where it broke. When we picked up the coil from the dealership, one of the tech mentioned this is a common breakage for them as well. Good luck!!

When taking out the plugs, do you unscrew them? Or just pull them out?

I got to the spark plugs then realized that my extension adapter wasn't long enough to reach the plug, it is deeper than I thought.........

P.S. NM, I think we unscrew them to take them out or else we wouldn't need to torque them when installing them.......

you need a longer extension then. you must unscrew them. no way around that.
