How does the Comfort Access System work? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

Is it similar to Merc's Keyless Go or something like that?

I have it on my current 120d. You walk to the car with the 'key' in your pocket, you DON'T push anything, just grab the doorhandle:Click, the doors unlock.

You can keep the 'key' in your pocket en just push the 'Start button': Engine runs!

Push Again: engine stops.

Still with 'key' in your pocket.

Getting out: THEN you have to click te key to lock te doors etc.

It's nice, but I won't have it on my 330i, cause it's 'nothing' actually imho, and you pay for 'nothing' imho.

On the test drive car (320)that i drove 2 weeks ago it had the comfort access option.You just have the key in your pocket and the system recognizes that you are near the car (about 1/2 meter away) and then the door locks open also the interior lighting.Also you don't have to put the key in the dash,you just push the starting button to start.To leave the car you just close the door and leave (again around 1/2 meter away) while having the key in your pocket,and the doors lock automaticly.I love this option.Hope i helped

boolis, then the E90 system wortks a little bit different than the E87 system. I have to 'touch' the doorhandle to unlock the doors, and to lock them I have to push the button on the key'the usual way'.

to Robin Hood,hi........On the E90 you don't touch the door handles.I was suprised too when the salesman said it to me when i was going to the car.I think this option is a must have.......

Comfort Access

"Also available for the first time on a BMW in this class is Comfort Access. All cars receive a newly designed key that replaces the conventional blade-type key but with Comfort Access the key contains an ID Sensor that the car recognises from a short distance away. On recognition, the doors are unlocked automatically and the car can be started with one push of the starter button. The Comfort Access system also works in tandem with BMW's familiar key memory system to ensure that the seating position, door mirrors, personalised air conditioning settings and radio reception are automatically adjusted to the current drivers' settings before they enter the car.

Walking up to his BMW properly locked and secured, all the driver has to do with Comfort Access is pull the door handle in order to open the door. Then, as he is taking his seat at the wheel, the Personal Profile functions serve to adjust, say, the driver’s seating position, the automatic air conditioning and the radio station according to the driver’s personal requirements.

Over and above these three functions, Car & Key Memory (CKM) also sets the interior and exterior mirrors, the central locking and interior lights, the audio system sound effects and, in a car appropriately equipped, the presentation on the Control Display as well as the voice entry setting.

Once the driver is ready to go, he simply presses the start/stop button. Once he has reached his destination, in turn, he presses the same button to switch off the engine. Then, placing his finger on the marked surface on the door handle after getting out and closing the door, he automatically locks and secures the car without requiring any further action. If he has forgotton the ID sensor in the car the doors will not lock and the driver will receive an appropriate warning. And should the electronic key control system ever fail to operate, the driver can insert the ID sensor into a slot in the instrument panel in order to drive the car just as conveniently the “conventional” way."

Here(EU) it's already available as you might know.
I'm glad I'm not a Cadillac/Vette/Viper freak(always waiting for those US thingies to come to Europe after months/years, hehehe j/k!

Hi,

no, you can not add it afterwards I think.

It requires all the antennas on the out- and inside of the car and the sensor areas on the door handles and the trunk... I don't think those can be installed without dissembling the whole car ;-)

You could still have an aftermarket alarm. But you´d have to arm it seperately, thus making CA silly.

Or you could wait until an aftermarket alarm manufacturer has figured out the bus protocols in the E90 and manages to plug into them. Don´t hold your breath, though. That might take some time.

I am getting comfort access (when I get my new car). The saleswoman at the dealer said it's a waste of money and hence gave it to me for free (she discounted the amount of money she thought I was wasting, now i only wish i had wasted more :/ better to not push my luck)

:-) It sounds really cool, but i'm still to see how well it works. I would most likely keep it in my pocket or sachel.

Funny though, here in south africa exiting some parking garages, they have guards to see if your keys are in your ignition (ie you haven't stolen/hotwired the car) --- I wonder what they'll think in this case when i tell them my car has no key hehe

So, if I just walk by my car it unlocks?

Let's say my car is in the driveway and I just walk by it to the neighbor's house. Now my car is unlocked?

Now I have to worry about did I just walk too close to my car? Is is locked or not?

How do you let passengers in? Does it unlock their doors too? What about carjackers?

And if you don't have it, now you have to insert key and press button?

That is weak.

I might like it if they didn't unlock until you pull the handle.

Just another example of fixing something that ain't broke!

i think its a case of if you come close to it it will unlock and then when you walk away it will lock, so there will be a point where if you keep stepping forward and backwards you will keep unlocking it and locking it.

i know on the mercs they have a little button on the door handle, you press this and as long as you have the card-key on you it unlocks.

The dealer showed it to me. In South Africa, it has been set that you walk up to the car (it remains locked) and when you pull the doorhandle, it unlocks and opens simultanously. Get in push start (doors lock on pull off). When you get out, you tap a demarkated spot on the handle and it locks.

Bear in mind, you have to be standing next to the car. If you walk past your car, it won't unlock it. It's in like a 50cm distance that enables the car to be unlocked.

one thing i would have liked which my e90 doesnt have but the X Type did is the doors locking when i drove off. I know there is a button on the dash but i would rather it locked automatically. is this a software option that can be turned on?

That is freakin cool!

Thanks for letting us know how it works. Hopefully it's programmed the same way in north america.

I believe that is possible. I think one can set that up with iDrive.
