ticking from the steering wheel

I always heard this but now I am getting good in noticing/reproducing it ....
When I am driving at very slow speed (for example while parking)
I hear/feel a tick from the steering wheel when starting to
rotate the wheel. I can in same occasion reproduce this several
times just rocking the steering wheel back and forth while
parking. It almost looks like a tiny play between the steering
wheel and the pignon. I never felt this at fast speed.

I don't have the speed sensitive power steering but just
the standard.

Anyone else noticed this ?

thanks,

fdc

A friend had this and he took it to the dealer where they replaced
the steering column. The dealer hinted that BMW has issued a TSB
about it. So a visit down your dealer may be in order.

I was there last week for an oil change and they checked: as now there is no recall or TSB for my model.
It is really minor but I'd like to know if I am the only one and how serius might be,

i have it too!

i have that click too! i've taken it to two dealers and have had multiple service techs drive it and they all say everything feels fine and nothing's wrong. But they're just not paying close enough attention or their hands are numb. i can replicate it at parking lot speeds turning right and then returning the steering to center.

if someone knows what the TSB is, please let me know. i've begun to live with it, but this shouldn't happen and it bugs...

Thanks you all ! This is great information.

Now the question is (perhaps e90fleet can answer)
what "Steering column manufacturing tolerances stack up" means ?

I mean is there and functionality/safety issue involved ? Is it
going to get worse over time ?

I don't really mind of a tick when pulling out of the garage or better
I do mind/worry of the dealer replacing the steering column.
I don't trust them much ....

How complicated of a job it is ? Do they have to take a lot of
components apart to get to the steering column or is a easy swap job I can trust any dealer to do it properly ...

I had that problem for the first 1000 miles or so, but now it seems to have worked itself out and the noise is gone. So maybe give it a little while before you replace the steering column.

I have this as well, I thought at 1st it was free play or something loose in the steering system, but at a parked state moving the steering wheel left to right feels tight but there is a tiny clink feel and sound at all times, driving it is less noticable.

The dealership said everything was in spec and wont fix it, so I am going to look into it this weekend myself and SEE what is making the noise, if I find something I will take pics and post them.

I have this click too...my buddies '06 330xi has the same thing....I'm thinking at this point its normal...granted I shouldnt be feeling anything in the steering wheel on my '08 335 but I've learned to accept that the dealership doesn't give a shit and to live with it.........oh well. Until I get any further side effects, I'll deal..maybe we all should.

well I took off my steering wheel, the plastic column pieces around the wheel and the under dash trim and I could not find a source of this ticking, clicking, The tsb says it was fixed on models made after 11/05. well mine was made on 3/06 and its not fixed.

I have just under 50K miles and it is more annoying than performance related. I guess I could get used to it if I have to.

Sorry for all the post, but I wanted to update for fellow steering wheel issue guys out there, Mine was built on 02/06 and I just took it to a 3rd party mechanic last night and bmw said there was Nothing wrong with it, but this mech. who is a friend of my wifes, said he noticed when turning wheel right nothing goes on, but when turning it left thats when it makes the clink style noise and it is not normal. He thinks that either the steering rack n pinion is messed up, but most likely it is binding in the column somewhere.

He didnt want to tear it apart because bmw would void it out.

So I will let you guys know once I drop it off to those guys at my dealership.

I have the same issue on my 2008 328xi sedan. It makes the click when the wheel is turned to the left, but not the right. Let us know how it goes at your dealership.

Interesting, mine is 6/06 build, way after the SIB date, and I've noticed a slight bump feeling in the steering at low speed when passing through the "center" if switching from about 180 degrees left to 180 degrees right. Mine is so slight it is almost unnoticeable. It's not audible. Still, since there is this SIB out there I asked an SA to look at it about a year ago. I think he thought I was crazy because he couldn't feel it initially. When I pointed it out, he felt it and said it was within spec.

Frankly, my steering feels so good that I wouldn't want to have the steering column replaced to "fix" this. However, it is noticeable once you notice it, if that makes sense. My car is 3 years old now, and if anything, this has gotten even less noticeable, so I'm not itching to take apart my steering column.

If you search for "steering thunk" or "steering column" you will find people who owned the earlier build. It sounds like it was MUCH worse on the early builds, where it was an audible clunk sound and feeling through the wheel.

^^ Update, if you see my one thread it is more detailed, but at 1st they said it was in spec this morning, but after getting the tech to look into it more, he said that it IS indeed the steering column and its a normal wear and tear issue it seems on the newer than 11/05 models.

They tested an 09 328i, a 2006 325i and 325xi all with various mileage on them, and the one with over 50k miles had almost the same issue as my car. They said they do not have to fix it since it is IN spec and is a wear and tear item, but since I have had so many issues with my bimmer since I bought it 3 weeks ago they said they will do a one time good faith swap. and Said it will slowly come back but it will be so gradual I wont notice it so much.

I have an '08 and I have the same issue. I noticed it in a parking garage a few weeks ago. It happens when I am coasting slowly and have to make
small left/right adjustements. That's when I get the clicks.
I also feel that the turning the wheel at a stop seems to drop the rpms a bit too much compared to other car's I've had, but this is my first 3 series and maybe it's normal.
What's the matter with BMW QC? First, the valve lifter ticking, now the steering column????

^^ I dont know but in my HONEST opinion, after driving 2 different 2009 328i X Drives for loaner vehicles with the same options as my 2006 325xi, I really think my 06 looks and handles better.

I have NO idea why, but it just seems tighter in curves and seems to idle better and run smoother when shifting. Maybe cause it has almost 50K miles on it and is well broken in or just my imagination.

I do like the blue tinted smaller sport mirrors, the hood design and front kidneys, and even the rims better than the 09 328i.

I like the clear corners in the headlights on the 08 more though, and the chrome around the radio knobs.

OH I will let you guys know how my cars steering wheel is once I get home. I just got another email from Serv. mang. stating that my column should be at the dealership in the morning, so by the aft I should have it all set to pick up.
