Arrow SpyPix--BMW 335d in Final U.S. Tests (282 hp / 428 lb-ft)

BMW is in the midst of its final testing for the U.S.-spec 335d--the first diesel-powered Bimmer to be sold in North America. The introduction of the 335d will coincide with the launch of facelifted sheetmetal destined for the entire 3-series lineup.

Due to e-mission restrictions, the U.S. version of the 335d will reportedly be down on power from its European cousin (265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque vs. 282 hp and 428 lb-ft.), but even our U.S. numbers--especially the fat torque number--promise terrific performance that may well be enough convince people to make the move to diesel.

As with the 335i gasoline engine, BMW will use two turbochargers--a small, low-pressure turbo to aid low-end acceleration and a more potent turbo to help at higher engine speeds. Acceleration for the 335d is expected be around 6.2-seconds to sixty, while fuel consumption will likely yield 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

BMW's new diesel range is expected to launch under the banner: BMW Advance Diesel with BluePerformance (Blue denotes the use of AdBlue--the aqueous urea solution used to reduce the diesel's nitrogen oxide emissions). The 335d is expected to bow this fall.

I drove it at training and also drive the X5 with the diesel. It was nice but not worth the approx 2500-3000 cost over the TT 6 cylinder. In the X5 on the other hand it makes sense. The X5 is actually quicker with this motor than the gas engine and gets better mileage. The X5 with that motor was amazing to drive I was extremly impressed with it. How can you beat it, more HP that the 3.0si gas engine and more torque than the V8 with the mileage os a 4 cyl SUV. It makes a lot more sense in the X5 that the 3 series to me and after driving both extensively on the track and on the road that point was more obvious to me.

Seems like it's plenty tough to move 335's nowadays with $1250 and 1.9%. Probably need some solid incentives to get someone to buy one. What people say and do with their money are two different things. Imagine dealers commanded list price in late 8/06 for a E92, now they can't move them.

I'd like to see us get the new 3.0 liter diesel debuting in the new F01 7 series here. I believe it is the more fuel efficient, single turbo version but is now making 245hp instead of 225hp. I think this would be more ideal for the 3-series, would be cheaper to buy up front, and would show better fuel economy than the 335d. i'd imagine this 245hp version of the engine will be in the new 330d following the face lift.

ideally however, I wish that the 323d would make it here to North America. 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder, twin-turbo diesel with 204hp and 300 ft-lbs of torque. And very frugal. This would be the engine for me!

I love the idea but with diesel costing more than regular gas and the fact that the diesel version doesn't get that much better mileage might hurt sales for his model.

The AdBlue filler...

(I wrote up a bunch of stuff on 'file about the diesels)

Also nice to see these planned "spy" photos with a cleaned car (except they forgot the front bumper) and watered down station in an old west town... lol

Read my response above....

The cutout in the rear bumper side is for the AdBlue filler.

If we are talking front bumper those are for the NEW front parking sensors which are going to finally make it to the US!

Totally agree with you... These kind of motors do their best in big SUVs (SAVs)...

It will fail. Diesel is too much at the moment, and the 335D wont be uber economical. It doesnt balance out in its favor currently.

I don't necessarily think it'll fail.. I like the idea that they are bringing the 'Big Guns' of diesel motors to the US... They need to show that diesels are a contender.
When VW brought their TDI motors over here (15 years ago), they made the mistake of only bringing the weak, eco-diesels; which didn't help with the whole 'diesel sucks' attitude that Americans have with them...
I only hope that they bring other motors like the one from the 123d and the 330d.
Like I said before, I'd buy a 330d 6mt in heartbeat if they brought it over and it was priced below that of the 335i... The 330d is a simpler motor (single turbo) than the complex sequential-turbo that the 335d has.
