Lightbulb DIY: Retrofit 335i cluster to 328i/325i with Perfekt Toolbox Settings!

Hello everyone! I'm new here but I thought I should share this, as I could not find this anywhere and I was having difficulty myself. After some messing around, I found an easy way to retrofit oil temp gauges onto your original cluster and fix the settings so the needles can be accurate! This goes for any E9X that came with the Fuel Economy gauge instead of the Oil Temp gauge.

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, AND PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE A CHARGED BATTERY WHILE DOING THIS

I will attach pictures of the process and my settings in order to make this easier

In my case, I was going for a complete stock look. I knew that simply plugging in another cluster would trigger a tamper dot (or even worse change your odometer) and I do not have access to an EPROM device so the best way was to take apart my original cluster and a donor cluster and transfer the gauges from the donor to my original. The process is straightforward and is explained clearly on Vehicle DIY's Youtube Channel better than I ever could.

NOTE: Please transfer both gauges and the RPM ring with the little lines behind the tachometer as well. I forgot that and I felt stupid lol. The ring for the cruise control does not need to be transferred, it is the same on both clusters.

Once the gauges are transferred, simply rebuild the cluster in the order you took it apart. Ensure when you place the needles, they are as close to their original position as possible when zeroed. I took pictures beforehand to help me out. You can take the needles apart again if your zero is off, just please be very careful with these parts. (I also transferred the 335i needles as well to complete the look)

Once everything is back together we can get to the settings!

1. Download and open Perfekt Toolbox, this is the easiest software to use when coding the cluster! You will need to have a DCAN cable and BMW Standard Tools already setup on your laptop.

2. PLEASE BACK UP YOUR KOMBI BY CLICKING THE "SAVE FROM ECU" BUTTON

3. After you backup your KOMBI settings, you are free to play around with the settings as you so choose, if you make a mistake you can load the settings from your backup at any time.

4. Test the Speedometer, Cruise Control, and Fuel Tank to ensure these needles are operating correctly and are moving to their desired locations. (If you zeroed your needles correctly, this should be accurate. In my case, my fuel gauge was one tick off so I reduced the starting position offset to 0 steps. If yours are heavily off, you will need to zero your needles again by hand or mess with the steps. Make sure you Write to ECU after each edit and Test with Perfekt Toolbox

5. Assuming all the other settings are correct for your liking, we can go to Tachometer. The 335i cluster maxes out at 8000 RPM while the 325i/328i cluster maxes out at 7433 RPM. As a result, our needle will be inaccurate.

My fix for this is to divide 8000/7433 = 1.07628145

I then multiplied this number by the numbers that are filled in the RPM boxes, starting from right to left.

The RPM values are as follows:
(before): 66, 1048, 2522, 4486, 7433
(after): 71, 1128, 2714, 4828, 8000

I DID NOT TOUCH THE MOTOR STEPS VALUES

[Stock Motor Step Values for Tachometer: 0, 616, 1540, 2773, 4622]

Write to your ECU and test with Perfekt Toolbox to ensure the rpm lines up perfectly.

6. After Tachometer is finished, you can go to Consumption/Oil Temp.

From there, you can change the Gauge Function from Consumption to Oil Temp.

After selecting Oil Temp, the menu will change slightly and remove the threshold speed option, you are now ready to edit the Oil Temperature Values.

Because I got my cluster in America, my donor cluster oil temp gauge reads from 160 F to 340 F. I converted these values to Celsius and laid out the corresponding values, assuming every motor step value meant ~25% of the gauge.

Oil Temp values are as follows (Write these values starting from right to left):
(new values in Celsius): 71, 96, 121, 146, 171

I DID NOT TOUCH THE MOTOR STEPS VALUES FOR THIS ONE EITHER

[Stock Motor Step Values for Oil Temp: 0, 418, 696, 1045, 1771]

Write to your ECU and Test with Perfekt Toolbox to ensure your oil temp values line up properly (121C is approx. 250F)

7. After that, you are free to sit down with a coffee or a drink and enjoy your work. The whole coding process with Perfekt Toolbox took me 15 min. The disassembly of the clusters took me an hour but was super easy once you get the hang of it. This brings your E90 up to date with a more modern-looking cluster + the RPMs go up faster since the rpm gauge goes up to 8000 RPM now.

NOTE: If your needles are still not perfect, you are allowed to mess with your settings. Just please make a back-up, as it would help a lot.

I will attach my photos of the process in order to make this DIY easier. Please let me know if there is anything I need to clear up, I will be happy to do so. Thank you for your time and good luck!

My final result! Note the missing little lines before the redline, I forgot that by accident. Will probably leave it as it is until I can find a reason to take it apart again.

Hahaha thanks! That money went towards M3 suspension components instead so I'm happy about that.

Thanks man! The first link worked for me. I'm using the Chrome browser and had to right click on the download program link at bottom of page and select "open link in new window" to start the download.

To make this a little bit easier, there's no need to do any calculations. Simply connect the 335i cluster to your car, insert key, open PT, and read everything. Now you can open the tach and oil temp and take a screen shot of the settings.

Reconnect your cluster, open PT, and use the settings that you just took the screenshots of. Changing the cons/temp gauge function first, then inputting the correct values for the temp and the tach.

Thanks, I did not think of that. I was afraid hooking up the old cluster might trigger an error of some sorts. I think the numbers in the screenshots I have posted should be accurate, someone can just copy those settings if they went from 325i cluster to 335i cluster like I did. I can try to find the old 335i cluster and check back.
