Police Handheld Scanner

I was looking around and came across this Handheld Scanner.

It seams like it is pretty cool toy that can save you some $$$. I like that it's very small and has all these cool features ...

ummm, i'm not sure what you're going to use it for. i dont think it'll help you avoid tickets or anything. usually cops that are hiding and looking for speeders arent also on their CB, disclosing their location.

I don't know about California, but it is illegal to have a scanner in your car in New York.

NY V&T Law Section 397:

§ 397. Equipping motor vehicles with radio receiving sets capable of
receiving signals on the frequencies allocated for police use. A
person, not a police officer or peace officer, acting pursuant to his
special duties, who equips a motor vehicle with a radio receiving set
capable of receiving signals on the frequencies allocated for police use
or knowingly uses a motor vehicle so equipped or who in any way
knowingly interferes with the transmission of radio messages by the
police without having first secured a permit so to do from the person
authorized to issue such a permit by the local governing body or board
of the city, town or village in which such person resides, or where such
person resides outside of a city or village in a county having a county
police department by the board of supervisors of such county, is guilty
of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not exceeding one thousand
dollars, or imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both.

Nobody's googled this yet?

http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/scanner5.html

I didn't verify everything on this page, but I checked a handful of references and it seems fairly thorough.

Summary is that having a police scanner in your car is illegal (unless you have an FCC amateur radio license) in New York, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky, and Florida.

And, as a further FYI, the analysis on the linked page of the New York ham radio exemption is all f'ed up. The bottom line is that the NY courts have, in at least 2 different cases, ruled that the law does not apply to licensed hams operating ham radios in their cars.

I found web site, which sells scanners.

Uniden BCT-15 TrunkTracker III Mobile/Base Scanner seems like a good choice.

http://policescanners4less.com/Merch...egory_Code=TRK

Did anyone buy something yet?

even if you did, is there any analog cell traffic to listen to anymore? A scanner isn't going to pick up CDMA or GSM cell conversations.

Here in the U.S., the FCC-approved turndown of the analog cellular spectrum took place in February 2008. Most major carriers turned their analog service down as soon as was feasible, but there may be some carriers, especially smaller ones, that are still operating analog service.
