EDIT: I have just put it in without screws. I don't know if it is ok. Also is it normal for the NBT to never actually power completely off. In the morning my NBT was instantly on (there was no boot animation) ? Doesn't that mean that the car doesn't go to sleep and that I will have battery drain issues ?
Yes mine is on constantly.... has been in for two years now and never fully flattens the battery. I drive mine every other day so gets a regular charge, so will depend on how much use your car gets

After some research I found out that NBT starts booting up as soon as you press the unlock button on your car. If I stay close do the door, unlock the car , enter the car fast and immediately after that insert the key, I see the boot animation. Maybe that is the case with you also or maybe it depends on the emulator.

Another question that I have is has anybody tried to enable BMW Live (Internet, Weather etc...) with Bluetooth internet ? I have coded this:
Quote:
3003 > DUN_PROFILE - aktiv
3003 > PAN_PROFILE - aktiv
3003 > ONLINE_BROWSER - beide_aktiv
3003 > ONLINE_SERVICES - nicht_aktiv
3003 > ONLINE_SERVICES_GLS - nicht_aktiv
3003 > ASSIST - nicht_aktiv
3003 > ONLINE_BROWSER_LIVE - aktiv
3003 > DATACOMM_CSIM - nicht_aktiv
But nothing shows up. I have only Mobile Care, Hotline and Your Service, which show up a phone number when I press them. I read that I have to code some VO, but I doubt I can code VO on a retrofitted NBT car.

well, after 3 years my retrofitted head unit started playing up: doesn't talk to iDrive, stuck in one position, no audio signals, etc. The screen is functional, the iDrive is still good too. So I am thinking about replacing just the head unit with the emulator (Evo version maybe?). Any leads in Australia? I am aware of Canadian and Romanian options. Was hoping for a closer option, ideally with installation.

You can buy the NBT headunit on ebay
The emulator needed to run the NBT on the E series comes from either the Canadian or Romanian vendors you mention above
You need the emulator for the NBT HU model you pick (ie standard NBT emulator wont work with a EVO NBT HU)
If you already have the emulator then replace your NBT HU with the same model, unless you are happy to buy a new emulator for $700+
Hope this helps

I was under the impression that the head unit has to be coded to my car VIN number. Or is it emulator only?

Not sure tbh. I am certain the emulator from Romania does not. The emulator from Canada on the other hand needs to be registered and activated by the seller. I think they use your vin to do this

Great DIY and contribution. With the right tools and "know-how" anything is possible.

How do NBT guys like the upgrade? I have factory CIC, would it be worth it for me to retrofit NBT? Really the only functionality I'm missing is Bluetooth Audio and I have a combox sitting for the retrofit. CIC + combox should have the basic functionality of NBT, correct? Plus I somewhat prefer the UI of CIC... Although I wouldn't mind the updated LCD of the NBT. I also prefer the bulky NBT controller but don't like that I have to file my trim... Decisions decisions

How about any issues with updating Navigation Maps? I am currently having issues updating CIC maps but I believe that to be a firmware issue (and should be resolved with an I-Level update). Any complications getting new map data loaded through the emulator? Does the glovebox/armrest USB still function?

NBT is def worth the upgrade over CIC for both looks and functionality. You can find up to date nav maps and USB can be made to work.

I want to do this on my e82 with CIC. I want genuine remote start, which doesn't come in iDrive 6 or the ConnectedDrive Store, yet. Car play is a nice addition! For me its about figuring out how to do both the head unit and upgrade my 2G chip. If I can have 5G, I will.

Hello, i have individual audio system, rear camera from E70, bluetooth after replacing the CIC to NBT unit, did you need to replace other modules to work like bluetooth, amplifier and the module for the rear camera to work? Because I have acquaintances who say that after this retrofit I will also have to change the parts I mentioned.

No I didn't replace any of those modules in my 2008 E92 but that doesn't mean you wont need to
