I will mention that the owner of Bimmerworks (a tuning shop in West Chester, PA) just bought a 335i coupe he is converting into a race car. So far it's been gutted down to strip the inside, added a roll cage, seats, harnesses etc. I think it had PSS9s on it and some stickier non-RFT rubber when he bought it (used), and that's about it. He said it was running quite well, and he was running lap times just shy of 996 GT3s. My guess is that if you wanted to spend some $ tuning the car, it could be a competent track car. I just think you could do more for less $ with an e46 M3 or even an older 993 porsche.
I know Steve well as he's done all the work on my car. He's seriously worried about how long the engine will last before it blows up. He said I made a good choice going NA if I want to keep the car for a long time. He's seeing quite a bit of problems with modified engines on the 335.

To go fast, you don't necessarily need to have all the HP in the world. If you want to go fast on the track, spend the money on suspension and brakes. You'll be surprised how much space you can put between yourself and someone with a "faster" car when they're running stock suspension. The distance they make up on the straights isn't near enough.

Personally, I'd go with the E36 M3. It has a great engine stock and with suspension work, brakes and wheels and tires they're SUPER fast. Plus, there are a TON of parts out there and it seems to be a hot ticket for track day cars at the moment. The parts don't cost an arm and a leg either. Many of the instructors at the BMWCCA Thunderbolt event were driving dedicated E36 M3 track day cars. I rode with my instructor and they were FAST!

If it also had decent coilovers...maybe.

Yeah on a two minute track, I'm within 1-2 seconds of stock Z06 and right on par with an R8. This is given similar drivers in my TT / instructor group.

I'm at about 42 track days, all with tune and my engine/turbo/hpfp is still in one piece. I just got the VK oil cooler, so now I'm running much cooler temps.

The fear is overblown, no pun intended.

If you don't mind me asking, is your vehicle cost including modifications also similar to Z06 cost?

I would say R comps are good for about 4 seconds at Laguna. I do beleive the GT3 time is on PSC R tires!!!!!

R -comps make a huge difference - especially towards the end of a sessions as street tires overheat.

Vehicle is about $45k.

Mods about $10-12k

LSD: $2600 installed
Coilovers: $2500 installed
wheels: $700 total
tires: $700 total
Tune: $1300

I also got some various and asundry mods (cats, oil cooler, etc.) that probably add a few more thousand. Most of those are unimportant. The important minor stuff include brake pads ($400 total) and RBF600 ($15 a half quart!)

So $55k all in. Start with a 335 sedan and shave a few K off of that. How much does a Z06 cost?

Is that with stock tires on your car? Throw equivalent tires on each car (even with your other modifications), and there can't be anyway you're within 1-2 seconds of the NEW Z06 (unless I was driving the Z06 ).

Z06 is putting down 505HP and weighs 3126 lbs.

335i is putting down 350HP (guessing with the avg toon) and weighs at best 3550 lbs.

If tires are equivalent, even if you upgrade suspension and getting a Quaife there's no way we can keep up. The Z06 is just in a different league. The Porsches have no chance against the Z06. This is assuming equally competent drivers in all cars.

Hell no, I will be the first to admit that I need to be on R-comps and the Z06 on STOCK everything.

The 911 GT3 quoted above is on R-comps, from the factory.

Gotcha. I was actually surprised about the 911 GT3 time compared to the Z06, but that explains that.

A quick search of the interweb suggests a C6 Z06 also costs ~55k

The particular example I found was used with 4k miles

Well there ya go. A new modified 335i is about the same cost as a used C6 Z06. And still a few seconds slower.

Then again, a new M3 is $10k more than a C6 Z06 and slower than both the modified 335i and the C6 Z06.

The Z06 is a great deal, no doubt. But last I checked, I don't have enough gray hair and my penis still works too well to buy a Z06.

Actually I think Z06/viper type cars are really awesome. Unfortunately I was shopping in the ~30k range not the ~60k range

Yeah.. Every car has it's bad name. People say bad things about us BMW owners too. Pretty boys. Preppies. Blah Blah Blah

It really doesn't matter what they call you, as long as they call you the fastest guy on the track. I love my 335i but I still admire the Z06 even if you have to have grey pubic hair to drive it.
