Anyone have a 3G iPhone with a 2006 E90?

I have a March 2006-built 330i, and would like to get an iPhone. I know there are reports of some compatibility issues with the old iPhone and pre-2007 E90s. I will probably be able to experiment with a friend's 3G iPhone later this weekend, and will buy one if it works, but was curious if anyone has tried this yet.

Thanks!

Today a friend bought a 3G iPhone and we experimented with it in my car. It appears to work great, and the phone book works as well (better, actually, than my Razr). I think I will buy one tomorrow.

I finally bought a 3G iPhone yesterday, and it appears to work great with my car (again, a March 2006-built 330i without I-Drive). The address book syncs perfectly (much better than my old phone, in that it clearly indicates which numbers are home, work, mobile, etc.) and the call quality is very good.

I came to the iPhone from Verizon with a RAZR V3c, and the iPhone definitely sounds a bit different through the car than my old phone did. The RAZR was clear but had a tendency to exhibit a bit of digital "clipping" where it would essentially cut out the other person's voice when I spoke. The iPhone doesn't seem as prone to this and overall the sound quality seems better, in that there is a more perceptible dynamic range between loud and quiet speech. I do hear what sounds like a tiny bit of echo of my own voice through the system, but it's subtle and not really distracting. On balance I'd say the iPhone sounds a hair better than the RAZR did.

So far the only weirdness with the iPhone came when I dropped a call (not sure why, but I guess I was in a dead zone for cell coverage), and the car WOULD NOT let me hang it up even though the phone itself acknowledged the call was over. I even stopped the car and turned it off, then restarted, and it still thought I was on a call. It self-corrected about a minute later.

The iPhone itself is a pretty amazing device. This is my first prolonged exposure to one and thus far I am very impressed. I also got a nice little Sony iPhone clock radio for my nightstand, where it will charge and allow me to wake to music from my iPhone.

Since my last post I have done this echo fix, and now my phone works perfectly and creates no echo at all.

I have a 2006 e90 330d saloon with idrive and BT. I can pair my iphone 3g with it, but then it continually disconnects and reconnects. I'm trying to find out from my dealer if they can upgrade the bluetooth and/or idrive software to the latest (pref for free) to get my phone to work.

my work nokia hooks up fine, but who wants to get calls from work while you're driving?

Hmm.. went into my local dealer this afternoon to ask about the bluetooth issue. Ended up speaking to the "master technician" who said that the BT and indeed, idrive firmware can be updated to the very latest and there is some deal whereby I can pay 99 (not sure why I was quoted in euros) to have all the firmwares brought up to the latest versions and BMW themselves will pay the rest of whatever it costs to bring it up to date. i.e. if it's just 10 mins with a CD then cool, but if it's 6 hours of labour to replace the car computer with the latest version (at about 1000) then they'll cover that too!

sounds like an interesting deal and one I might well take advantage of, but apparently they will only do this for cars that are still in manufacturers warrantee (which mine still is) and once every 12 months. so I've only got one chance to do this cheap and I should probably wait for BMW to official state support for the iphone 3g...

what do you folks think?

apparently my software is still the same as it was when it rolled out of the factory in early 2006 and it's not the fastest software in the world, so it could do with the upgrade.

Did you get your iPhone 3G to work with a 2006 model after the idrive was updated? Does the address book sync OK?

Cheers

heh, I haven't had the work done yet. I was kinda hoping to see the BMW website officially support the iphone 3g as they have done the iphone. then the compatibility would be guaranteed. I'll only be able to do this once, so I wanted to do it right. as yet the iphone 3g is not on the list.

However, if I have to take the car in for some other reason, then I'll have the work done then regardless. at some point, I'll want to put the car through a pre-warrantee expiring inspection so they can pick up anything that needs doing that the warrantee would pay for.

I understand the 3G iphone does work with later models of E90 (e.g. from 2007), hence it is possible that current software in earlier 2006 E90 hardware may make the 3G phone work (i.e. including the address book - I've seen my iphone 3G make calls with a 2006 E90 idrive, but the phone book didn't seem to sync).

kei - have you seen a 3G iphone work properly with a 2006 car - if so what progman version was it using (silver screen, brown screen, etc.)

Unhappy iphone compatibility problems

Hello,
It seems I have the same problem of compatibility.
I have an Iphone 2G (first one) and 2006 E90 - 330XD with idrive & Bluetooth.
It works great with my samsung, but not with my iphone (connects then disconnect every 30 seconds) thus i do not have acces to the adress book.
What is weird is that when I succeed in giving a call (have to dial a number very fast), the communication works well & is not interrupted....
I will go on wednesday to BMW to know what to do.

*But I fear they have no idea.....
If you have news about this problem, i am interested.
Did you test with another phone ?

btw, I have the firmware 2.0.2 on my iphone.

Hello all,
to complete my previous message :
an Ipod connector will be installed in 2 weeks on my car. They plan to do an update of the software of the car (idrive), I hope it will solve my bluetooth connection problem at the same time.....
Any experience of software update solving that connection/disconnection pb ?
