Semptember update brings mp3 capability to iDrive stereo - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

A document entitled Product Planning and Strategy BMW Dealer Bulletin: MY2006 3 Series September 2005 Production Information on bimmerfest states the following:

MY2006 E90 3 Series Sedan
Options
• Comfort Access can now be ordered as a stand alone option
• SMG transmission was originally planned to start production for the E90 MY2006 330i Sedan beginning in September 2005. It will not be offered in the U.S. market on the E90 3 Series.

Colors
The following colors can now be ordered:
• Mystic Blue Metallic
• Barrique Red Metallic
• Deep Green Metallic
• Sonora Metallic

Updates
• MP3 capability is added to the stereo on vehicles equipped with Navigation. MP3 capability was previously only available on the stereo without Navigation.

I wonder if this is an update to the hardware in September production or if it's a software update that will be available to all. I seriously hope it is the latter!

I seriously doubt that its an update to hardware. From what I understand about MP3s they're decoded using software and not hardware components.

So I guess this will be available to all E90 owners with Navi as a SW update from your dealers.

Anyone concur?

Yeah, this is what logic says; mp3 is decoded using software. But how knows if they now use a new unit and the software is only for that.

Just saying that there is no real way to know until it is confirmed by BMW.

With this update, can you play MP3 CDs through the dashboard? Or do I need to buy the 6 cd changer with the Idrive/NAV for mp3 function?

The document talks about the normal stereo; no accessory needed (CD Changer).

I'm really quite confident this will happen. It only makes sense and I don't know of any case where these documents lied and the dealers didn't end up receiving the updates. Relax

I asked because maybe the update meant that for the 6 cd changer that wasnt working because bmw stated you need the cd changer to play mp3s with idrive/nav

You're kidding, right? You already know more than the dealers. What's worse is that you know more than they EVEN WANT TO KNOW.

I asked a service manager about this update and whether or not they'd let me know when the update was available. He said they don't bother telling people about these updates and they don't necessarily do them when the car is in for maintenance.

No, I think I have a right to know about updates because I am spending good amount of money on this car like everyone else in this forum. Only thing is my dealer SAID the cd player plays MP3s and thats the reason why I would discuss it with him.

You are absolutely right though. When I test drove the car, I knew more about the car then the dealer (thanks to e90post.com!). I just hope I can resolve the mp3 issue because I have nothing else to worry about

I am probably picking it up the car this tuesday or wednesday!

ur right OZ , members of E90 post know more than the dealers themselves, so i wont be expecting the dealer to know about this update, after i got the car, they dont seem to be helpful anymore

I picked up the car last night and my dealer did not know about the september BMW bulletin. I'm going to print it and get him a copy next time I see him
