Question Smartphone Integration (6NF) on 2009 Models

The 2009 3 series dealer pricing sheets available on Bimmerfest.com show an option called "Smartphone Integration (6NF)". This option requires the iPod and USB adapter (6FL) or, on some models, either the premium package (ZPP) or BMW Assist with bluetooth (639).

Does anyone know what the Smartphone Integration entails? The name implies that it would allow the owner to integrate their smartphone into the system, but can't that be done now through bluetooth? I posed the question to my dealer and, although they were briefed on this feature, nobody could remember the details.

Thank you!

For the iPhone, adds:
  • iPod control/paythrough/charging in addition to the standard iPod connection
  • Address Book connection
  • Better reception by leveraging the car antenna to the phone

Talking Snap-in smartphone adapter for 2009 idrive

I just went to a dealer in Mainz-Kastel, KARL+CO with my 09 335i. The parts guy there said that the specific smartphone snap-in adapters are not only unavailable, but there is no literature about them and no pricing.

The U.S. Spec vehicles being sold in Germany to US Servicemembers like us that have the snap-in adapter already are really first-run. Nobody knows how this stuff works, not even the dealers because the German-spec vehicles are coming a few weeks after the US Spec versions started production. Imagine that.

The tech there are KARL+CO told me to expect about 200 EURO for each phone-specific adapter (that is his estimate for the 3G iPhone adapter). However he also said that using the phone while listening to music is not possible. I think he is still thinking of how the 2008 & earlier system works.

I have a call in with BMW AG tech support about this and will let you know what I find out. Sure would be nice if the manufacturer released tech guidance about this before selling it. There is nothing about how to use the new 2009 idrive with snap-in adapter in my manual. Only info on how to pair bluetooth (wirelessly without the snap-in smartphone adapter).

All things considered, it is quite expensive - 1900US for navigation, 400US for the ipod/USB adapter, then 150US for the smartphone adapter, then you have to buy the specific phone adapter, another 200 EURO.. Wow maybe you should just wait to make that call when you get home.

If anyone finds a source for the adapter, please post. I picked up my 09 this week and am looking to find one. Thanks.

I just talked with the (pay) customer support here in Munich. For my 09, they tell me that the universal base module "Smartphone Integration (6NF)" will accept a variety of smartphones, a quantity that will grow over time starting naturally with the iPhone 3G.

All ports added together, you have 4 ports in the car now:
1-2. The common USB/Headphone jack for the ipod, which MUST be used in combination with the optional 48 EURO two-wire adapter for management through the new iDrive. Of course any music player can use the headphone jack alone, and hundreds of mp3 devices can use the USB port alone.
3. The USB interface in the glovebox, for import and backup of music, video, any (allowable) files stored in the car's idrive hard drive.
4. The smartphone base station/cradle/whatever you want to call it, which must be used in conjunction with an optional model-specific phone adapter.

For example - You have an iPhone 3g and the wife has a Treo. Theoretically, you swap the snap-in adapter (yet to be released) for the 3G with the Treo adapter, and you can use either phone. Once hooked in, you can do more than just make calls, but access data on the phone including advanced address book (web, email, address for GPS lookup) and music simultaneously. The big gain here is to be able to listen to iPhone music while also using the addresses/phone numbers in the iphone.

BMW tells me that the local dealers should have at least the iPhone 3G adapters here in Germany on Monday, November 17, 2008. Expect about 120 EUR.

That will be great if true.

I wonder if the new 3G cradle adapter will work with the older non-6NF cradle base plate (sans music playback, of course)? If not, I wonder it the new 6NF cradle base plate will work in a pre-09 car (again, sans music playback)?

Hopefully we can get the base-plate/adapters soon and try to answer these and other questions.

Actually, no, there is no wired connection to the address book. Address book connection is done over Bluetooth even with 6NF.

Note that supposedly if you have a Smartphone connection to 6NF you can only listen to music on it if there is nothing connected to 6FL. There is no way to select via iDrive - there is basically one USB connection active, and 6FL get priority.

That doesn't surprise me and also doesn't bother me. I'm guessing 6NF would be more expensive than $150 if it was truly a separate input.

Hellow bryan, did you find BMW's claim to be accurate today?

Now that it's out, could you please let us know the part number?

Thanks!

Keep in mind that the total cost of 6NF is over double the $150 after you buy the snap-in adapter (if they ever release them).

It does bother me. I would like to keep a large permanent music collection on either a hard-disk-equipped iPod or a large USB stick connected to 6FL that I would just leave in the car all the time. But then also allow playing from my iPhone, where I would be downloading recent podcasts, etc., since I'll always be taking it out of the car.

It makes total sense that the 6FL and 6NF should be different inputs selectable via iDrive. But, hey, 6NF as planned to be implemented is better than nothing....

Smartphone adapter for iPhone 3G ships mid-December

The Smartphone adapter for iPhone 3G ships mid-December, told to me at the BMW Niederlassung nextdoor to the factory in Munich. I thought I would go into the most likely place to get a straight answer and was told they would not be shipped to the dealers for another week or so.

However the part numbers are out. I ordered one and left my phone number for when it arrives. I'll see if I can't get the part number tomorrow from the dealer.

I looked on BMW.de and the closest thing I found to the 3er product has this description. Note the date available and description (direct connection with music playable simultaneously):

Preis 119,00 €

Erhältlich für 7er ab 11/08"

from http://www.bmw.de/de/de/owners/acces...er/finder.html - just click on Zubehör Showroom and select the drop-down in the third column "Telekommunikation"

bryanwxup, anything you can do to get us the part number would be greatly appreciated!

(It's amazing that the snap-in with USB functionality is 3 times the price of the standard snap-in adapter!)

Arrow Smartphone adapter for iPhone 3G PART NUMBER

I just called my dealer here in Bremerhaven "Bobrink" about the ordered part for the iPhone 3G. They have a list with about 40 phones on it, but I can't say how many of those are to mate with/without the 6NF package.

For the iPhone 3G:
84 21 2 151 038 without the 6NF option.
84 21 2 151 043 with the 6NF option installed "USB-Anschluss"

I can't tell exactly what the technician was saying about the ability to play music, but I think it is actually a THIRD USB adapter, where the iPhone 3G plugs into the snap-in, and you can still have not only an iPod in the USB jack in the center console but have also one more USB device in the glovebox.

I think that the USB adapter in the glovebox is only used to upload songs onto the hardrive that comes with the new iDrive.

Smartphone adapter for iPhone 3G PART NUMBER

Yes, the part numbers are only for the SNAP-IN adapter, nothing more.

84 21 2 151 038 for the iPhone 3G adapter in cars without 6NF option.
84 21 2 151 043 for the iPhone 3G adapter in cars with 6NF option.
  • The glovebox USB port can play music directly, but features are limited. The primary purpose of the USB port in the glovebox is to load large quantities of data such as music, movies (don't ask me about formats or how-to), and of course flash software updates and Navigational map information.
  • The console USB port in combination with the 50 EURO iPod/iPhone/iTouch Y-Cable provides music with all of the standard iPod options such as artist/genre, etc. plus an A-Z search which goes beyond the feature list of some iPods.
  • The console USB port WITHOUT the use of the Y-Cable will only play songs in order from the attached device.
  • The console headphone adapter does just what a usual headphone adapter will do, play sound and no data.
  • The console USB adapter from 2009 onwards will charge all iPod units. I have tested it on my iPhone 3g, Nano 2nd Gen and Nano 4th Gen.

Hope that clears things up!

First one to get that snap-in adapter please post details.
