Pics- Dinan vs. OEM Flywheel

Got a chance to see a Dinan flywheel, so I should I would share some crappy camera phone pics... Im sure you all know its just an OEM flywheel thats shaved and rebalanced... Ill let the pics to the talking....

Not sure how much a lighter flywheel will do for these cars, but, at Dinan prices, it probably wouldn't be worth it anyway.
But if it's under a grand, gives 10+ rwhp and quickens the throttle response, spool up and so forth a bit, it will probably sell.
But if it's $2k+ and gives only 5-7 rwhp (as I'd guess) then they won't sell many.

BTW, in the side by side pic with what I'd assume is the OEM one, the Dinan one looks neither smaller nor lighter.

Hmmm... interesting. So, what is the weight difference? It kind of makes you feel even more shafted. I had no idea that it was a modified OEM flywheel.

Yeah, I'm going to guess the one on the left is the Dinan modified flywheel, but really this is a joke. Does Dinan do anything more than rebadging parts from other companies and selling them at a higher price? I'd love to know the numbers on this as well. I wouldn't bet on it costing $1k.

This flywheel has been out for a long time. I think they stuck with just machining mass off of the OEM flywheel to reduce the possibility of having annoying noise issues with constructing an entirely new one.

Unless you have deep pockets, or you are unhealthily obsessed with your car, this mod doesn't seem worth it at all IMHO.

If you look at the 3rd pic down there is quite a bit of metal shaved off from the outer edge. I don't think there will be much horsepower gain, but with the less rotational mass i would expect the throttle response to be alot better. I would love to know the actual weight difference...and even more so how much of the weight savings is from the outside edge. Anyone know what Dinan claims the difference is?

Edit...they also probably went with a modified stock flywheel b/c its a dual mass flywheel and they didn't want to deal with the headache's of making an entirely new dual mass flywheel.

It's very possible they can get a 23% reduction in rotational inertia, which is what matters as the flywheel spins. The generic equation is Mass*radius^2/2 for a solid disk. Since the weight is coming off the outside the effect is greater. A 6% reduction in radius of a solid disk will yield a ~23% reduction in rotational inertia. Granted that is an oversimplification, but it can justify the rationality.
