To Dinan or not to Dinan...

I am able to get a fairly good deal on these new Dinan parts: Exhaust, intake and Trottle body. I read different stories/opinion on this forum. The total gain (on paper) after these 3 mods is + 15 hp (255 -> 270 hp). Is it worth it? How will these 3 parts affect my MPG? I am fairly satisfied with my current MPG, but a little more torque would also be nice. If I go for it, I am also considering the ECU mod after they release it (currently in test). All of this worth the $$ or are there better alternates out there - keeping the 330i?

As seen from the DIY, the Dinan intake requires drilling of the stock airbox and depending on your mechanical aptitude idk if this is the right route for you.

For the exhaust, the quality is nice, but the appearance of the piping could be better, but the only way to tell is by looking under. The tone of the exhaust is a bit on the quieter side. I would recommend you go for the BMW performance Exhaust. 1st off, it is OEM fit and finish. The sound is amazing, I recommend you check out the videos that Allan posted in the NA forums. The sound shouldn't be too far off from the 328i tone.

2000 323Ci  [3.00]
2006 330i  [4.50]
2013 BMW 135is  [4.50]
Dinan cost:
Throttle body - $399
Intake - $449
Exhaust - $1599
----------------
Total w/Throttle body - $2447
Total wo/throttle body - $2048

BMW Performance parts
Intake - $795 (Tischer price)
Exhaust - $1004 (Tischer price)
-------------------------
Total wo/throttle body - $1799

I'd go with the BMW parts (factory backed), saving $249. Then decide if you want the throttle body.

FYI, I already have the BMW exhaust and it is very good. I had an Eisenmann race muffler prior and I would recommend the BMW over the Eisenmann.

I'd go Gruppe M intake, Riss Racing exhaust or muffler delete if you're bold enough (i was and it sounds puuuuuuuuurrrrfect), and then dinan throttle body. this with the TB would be well under $2k.

my $.02

before you jump on the throttle body by Dinan, read the extensive review posted by ksfrogman.

Is this the "extensive" review you are referring to? I searched but maybe not good enough?!?!?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36024

The idea is to do all 3 Dinan parts, intake, TB and exhaust. On paper the gains should be 255 -> 270 HP (+15 HP or 6%) and 220 ft/lb -> 243 ft/lb (+23 or 10%). I assume the Dinan Engineering department is there to improve our cars, not to have a name and collect money on parts that are not doing what they suppose to do. That would ruin their reputation, right?

I listend to the soundclips of the BMW Performance exhaust, that growl might be a little to much for my taste... But I can def see people going for that...

Here is the Dinan:

why are you quoting 'extensive' as if Michael's aka ksfrogman's review is bullcrap? Take the time and read through all of the links referenced by ksfrogman in that thread.

Hey I'm just giving you a head's up so that you won't have to waste your money but If you still are convinced that "Dinan Engineering department is there to improve our cars, not to have a name and collect money on parts that are not doing what they suppose to do." Then go ahead and plop down your money.

I got your PM. The links you provided ae actually of my car. The difference with Dinan Parts is not really noticable. I feel a little stronger in the midrange but it may just be in my head. I got the Dinan because to me it sounds better than any exhaust. I actually went with the Bimmian/Simota CF intake as that paired with the Dinan exhaust sounds perfect to me. My Dinan fit was perfect. The muffler is not as SHINY and SHOWY Chrome like others like but that did not matter to me. I love the sound of it, which is the most important factor to me. You dont even see all of the shiny parts once the exhaust is installed anyways. A lot of people on this forum hate Dinan yet the have no experience with the products. Listen to exhaust clips and buy the one that sounds best to you and dont waoor about what others say. Everyone who has heard my car loves the way it sounds and its loud but not annoying when you push it hard yet when driving normally its not a lot louder than stock. IMO you cant go wrong with any of the major exhausts for the car.

BMW PERFORMANCE > Dinan

Dinan parts are really conservative. The intake won't change the sound of your car either (FAIL). Also, there are so many after-market parts that are out there that's less than Dinan components... Also, i think a member (ksfrogman) lost hp w/ the throttle body? Don't quote me on that.

IMHO, the only reason people should [and would] go with dinan is to keep the warranty intact -- that is, provided you get them installed at your local stealership... Other than that, BMW Performance, i'm assuming, won't void your warranty either. I know that warranty is VOID only if the dealer can guarantee that the mods are what caused the (potential) failure but, still, knowing that your warranty is unaffected is worth a few dollars of pecae of mind.

Go w/ BMW performance parts... from what i've heard, they look and sound amazing. I even prefer the new BMW performance intake over the real Gruppe-M (the long, uncontested champion of intakes on e9x's.

IMO, the Dinan stuff gives it a little better midrange response.

I have the Dinan Exhaust, Intake, and Throttle body. My fuel mileage in the city is approximately 22-23 city and 29-30 freeway so it doesnt make a huge change on fuel economy. I like the Dinan stuff because it looks good, and sounds awesome. Plus the 100k mile warranty is unaffected by the mods is nice.

Its a NA motor. There is only so much you can do without going forced induction or ripping the engine apart.

BTW - I talked to someone about the Dinan software, and it should be coming soon.
