Detailing kits

Spring has sprung and I'm getting ready to detail my bimmer. My experience with washing and waxing is intermediate. I spent a summer working at a marina washing and waxing boats (one side job on a car with my boss) and I've detailed my jeep 3 years ago.

I've done a bunch of reading on these forums and found out these A LOT more that can be done to bring out a nice shine in a car. Since I bought my first BMW 3 months ago, I figured I'd do it right.

I want to start out buying a kit to do my first detail so I can gradually add to it and try different products that I seem fit. So right now I got my eye on this: http://autogeek.net/sokit.html If the link doesn't work, it's for Pinnacle Souveran carnuba wax and Klasse All-in-one. In addition, a clay bar, clay lube, detail spray, 3 microfiber clothes, 2 foam applicators, 1 microfiber deatiling pad.

Seems like reputable brands and has pretty much everything I need. If anyone has any suggestions, please send them my way!

Just want to point out that this forum has two sponsors, both of which I prefer to Autogeek:

www.detailersdomain.com
www.detailedimage.com

Phil (DD) and George (DI) are quick to respond to questions. Both have a 10% discount for forum users too. DI sells the Chemical-Guys branded stuff which I love.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they have kits too. If you wanted to custom stuff, I wouldn't be surprised (but in no way am I guaranteeing) if you e-mailed them and could work something out.

Both DD and DI are fantastic places to deal with. Simply unbeatable.

My recommendation would be to try making your own kit though, perhaps with some help from the experienced detailers here as well as George or Phil. It may seem intimidating at first (there are a lot of products out there), but do some research, read some reviews, and ask around. You'll find products that suit your specific needs best and can start there.

No detail kit is complete without at least two buckets, at least two grit guards, some good quality waffle-weave MF drying towels, and some general purpose MF towels. You'll also need some wash media - some prefer sheepskin mitts, others prefer a sponge (I like the Proline grout sponges from Lowes personally).

You'll have to decide on what you want to accomplish based on your needs, desires, and budget.

About the buckets -- I agree two are best, but just as an FYI you can go to Home Depot and get them for $2.50 - $5.00 (depending on location). They are a pretty standard size and will fit the grit guards.

Grit Guards are pretty awesome, I was so surprised how well they work.
