I say NO. I paid > $300 for the aFe DCI and ran it for several months...liked it (especially the louder "whoosh" of air being sucked in I heard when I stepped on it, but never really knew if it made more HP/TQ. Well, I recently put my oem stock intake back on (with the BMC drop-in air filter) and although I don't hear that "whoosh" sound anymore, it seems like the power is the same or possibly more due to slightly cooler air coming in through from the front grill and SwoopScoops.
![]() ![]() Sorry for the "not so simple" answer; just thought you would want to know a little more background info. ![]()

Wow, I was about to get one too. Thanks for the insight guys.
So no for intakes on our cars right? Does Hotrod run a drop in filter at least? Or is he breaking records with a completely stock panel filter? |

the stock BMW airbox is very well engineered. I'd like to give the ultimate racing CAI a shot but if the filters are going to stay in the engine bay they need to be enclosed. The best solution might be a drop in filter.

Im not really a big fan of the dci's either, but I am not sure this is a fair comparison..any open element filter is probably gonna lose power on the dyno with the hood closed. It doesnt simulate the type of airflow that would be getting to the intake on the road; on the dyno it would just suck in lots of hot air. Did you do any vbox/gtech testing of the afe vs. stock intake?

I'd say no. I didn't like the fit as the intake pipes were a bit smaller than the OEM hoses which causes the hoses to crinkle like a mofo when you cinch down the hose clamp. It's like that with BMS too. The only intake I've had with solid fitment was the UR CAI.

If the AFE supposedly loses 20hp that's something you would definitely feel. I don't know about that much, might be a bit of a stretch. |

I had AFE for long time and switched back to stock. Only the sound got louder with the intake.. Stock feels more balanced and responsive in low end. Some people say after 5k rpm the DCI's help alot..Cant really tell much difference

NO. if you want pretty, I personally think Injen has that. If you want power, the simplest and "most lightweight" and cost effective way to get more air flow is the BMS DCI... however I don't know if the increased air flow makes up for the increased temperature. I think they pretty much balance out, since the DCI helps the turbo's spool up "easier" due to less restriction. I personally think a Helene drop-in panel filter is as good as it gets on these cars, so far.
