Dropped a tool bit into my engine compartment. yup
![]() Ok so when I was putting back my dci I used the wrong small flathead bit for the bit screw holder and when I put it down towards the engine it fell into the engine. I tried to look for it but its not there. Will I be okay driving? or do I have to go on a lift and take out the under panels? (which I really do not want to do) |

Its probably sitting on the bottom cover - you will probably be ok.

Did you try a magnetic pickup tool for a while?

I dropped a screw once and didnt drive my car for two whole days in fear of damaging it. Had to remove the bumper and underside fairing to get to it, felt like a needle was stuck in the car when the thing was in there.

of course you will be ok, the engine is closed up its not like it fell inside the motor... and the only other objects you have to check is the belts make sure its not by the pulleys, but if its a small bit its nothin to worry about.

Flashlight and magnetic pick up tool for the win.
I agree, check the bottom engine cover..it's removed fairly easily from underneath if you need to.

If it fell into the engine compartment it all depends if you want it back or not... it makes a huge difference where you dropped it obviously |

I did the same thing today installed my AFE one of my socket fail though the hole at the bottom which will be the bottom engine cover right.
Question do I need to remove the whole cover to get my socket? Will it be there untell I remove the cover right ? If will be be in danger of anything? ![]() |

You will be fine, buy since you are a BMW owner I know it is KILLING you because you are propbably very anal. So either do what a member said on here (magnet pick-up and flash light) or remove the under cover and while you are it check for any leaks under there (nothing to worry about, but it doesn't hurt to inspect.)

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

You can also try putting the magnet under the car and dragging the socket to the nearest opening.
