Acceleration lag in 2007 328xi?
I just bought a used 2007 328xi. Though I love the way the car drives and handles once at speed, the car has a very annoying lag in acceleration at low speeds. I note that several reviewers mentioned the same thing. Although it diminishes slightly when in sport mode, this 3.0 liter is not nearly as sprightly as my wife's E46 2.5 liter.
Are all Xi's this way? Are there any computer updates that could fix this? The only way to really defeat it off the line is to turn off DTC and DSC, then run it in pure manual shift mode. |

can't really help you there, but the truth is, for 328xi owners, you bought a luxury car that's meant to drive fancy and smooth, not fast and sporty, even with the sport package it's more of a luxury car than a racer car lol. and i've been trying to do the same research but i came to that resolve shortly realizing that there isn't much out there for xi's especially 328s. so i've decided to just go purely for looks. if you're really looking to get a faster ride, upgrade to the 335.

Well, it does drive fancy and smooth. I just wish the acceleration was more predictable, especially coming out of curves. Too late to upgrade now. This is my car for the next 100k miles. Once I get a new audio system, I'll be happy enough.
Thanks for the response. |

So does anyone know if I turn off the DTC, and DSC but leave it in auto mode all the time if it will hurt anything in the long run? As if I drive my xi all the time with nanny modes turned OFF.
Thanks

It's the crappy automatic transmission. (I had a 09 328xi loaner with one, no miles on the car) If you really care about response/smoothness, go manual next time.

I also experience this, and am somewhat disappointed. That is why all of my mods are strictly for looks. I love it nonetheless, but sometimes wish I got the 335. There has been mention of a software/timing adjustment that can be done at the dealer. Perhaps I'll just have to man up and get the M in a few months

Damn, almost got rear-ended by an Audi today because the engine/tranny/computer didn't respond the way I expected while changing to a faster lane, even though I put the accelerator down to the floor, even pushing the little button under the pedal. I swear the car took 2 full seconds to analyze the sudden input I gave it before it responded.
No, I wasn't in sport mode, but that will teach me to knock the stick left from now on. |

Welcome to the "adaptive" transmission
I too have the stupid-tronic in a 328xi. If traffic has been light & I can accelerate well for a while the transmission adapts to a more rowdy state. If I've had to (or chosen to) drive mellow, it gets sluggish. I've tested it by punching it to the floor on the same road at the same speed, and had it downshift two gears one time (after being rowdy) and only one the next (after being mellow). Drives me crazy. I'll never get another BMW automatic. I want obedience and consistency, not a mystery response. If you can, put it in drive sport mode before you punch it.
(And if you've just hit the brakes hard from 40 mph or higher in 6th gear and drive, don't expect anything for over three seconds.) see http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245598 |

I have been making a habit of flipping over to sport mode if I need to punch it.... it seems to work better.

It's not a race car. Don't expect a $40k-ish car with an auto transmission to perform like one. yes, I know... you bought a BMW, but it is still just a $40k-ish car.

You need to drive a 328 to figure out what is going on... I don't think any of us are expecting race car performance, but it seems that the lag has been apparent on 325s and 328s.

My wife's car is an auto, and it behaves as you describe - but only at (the worst) times. Seems like if you get on the gas, then take your foot off briefly, and then floor it again, it pauses for a loooong time before getting all ducks in a row. Would hope there's a software fix for this...

Sport mode is for automatic cars. I think with step-tronic?
1) Put your car in Drive 2) Take the shifter in your hand and pull it to the left once in drive 3) Look at the screen between the speedo and tacho and it should say "DS" 4) Leave it there as long as you want to be in sport mode then shift it to the right again to go back to regular drive. and the screen will say "D" It keeps the car in a lower gear and rev's higher...It makes a huge difference in the responsiveness of the gass pedal and gives you more torque and hp more readily available. I use it any time I'm making a nippy maneuver...so all the time lol

when you are cruising it only effects the instant gas mileage by around 3 or 4 mpg (im very gas mileage conscious) and on the acceleration its a little worse than normal. Overall, if you drove like that all the time...I would say you'd drop 4 or 5 mpg...but you would only use it selectively because you can switch to DS while driving along or at any time. I use it only when I need bursts of power

It really isnt too horrific on the gas mileage and if your feeling hyped up and you wanna punch it and weave some that is definitely the mode to do it in.
You are right though...it's like driving a different car...I feel honored to have bought another BMW owner into the "DS" world haha.. Aren't you so much prouder of your cars capabilities now?

try changing to a K&N air filter and remove the charcoal/carbon filter....a big improvement in throttle response, not big HP gains but it feels more alive
