How fast can you safely go with a roofbox?

Summer is here, and so is a daft question.

Last years summer holiday saw me go to cornwall for 2 weeks, lasted 2 days cos it pissed it down and I came back and went to Spain.

So a late night drive back up the M5/M42/M1 saw me in a hurry, but with the box on the roof didnt set the cruise higher than 87.

Just got back from France and the motorways full of people doing 90++ complete with the roof boxes. So clearly I was been over cautious.

So just how fast can/dare you go with a roof box? ANd has it ever gone wrong?!

Never had one but was coming back from Blackpool recently and saw lots of brake lights ahead.... some nutter was running inbetween the motorway traffic picking up kids clothes and toys!!!!!!! - The car was parked up a little further on with the roofbox wide open. I was amazed at how no-one killed him.

Hi, I bought a roofbox for a trip down to the Bavarian Alps a few years back. At the time I had an E46 325 Sport and remember the instructions with the box stated no more than 100 KPH. Initially I was going about 75-80MPH on the Autobahn but after a while I noticed loads of crazy Germans doing alot faster with boxes and canoes on their roofs. I ramped things up and got to about 105mph in the end, very noisy though. On the way back we covered the 500miles doing about 95-100mph where possible, mpg suffered a bit, 22mpg out of a 325 isn't too hot

I used to carry a lot of skis in a previous job and travelled to the Alps in various cars with a box on fairly regularly. Used to go flat out wherever possible on the autobahns topping out between 130 and 140mph (wind behind, downhill, quality fuel etc. etc.) The power of the car and how aerodynamic it all is will determine how fast over 100mph you can go.

Depending on how much weight you have on board will depend on how stable you are. Quick lane changes at speed will make the car unstable. Quality of roof box will depend if the box flies open at speed. Extra straps wrapped around can give you peace of mind. Braking can become an issue with a lot of weight as I found out rear ending a car once. Lucky not to loose the box. Some one I know rear ended a car on the M25 and lost his box. It ricocheted off several cars before it came to a rest.

The new BMW box I bought this week (which I believe is made by Thule) just says observe speed limits up to 130kph.

You mean your missus lets you do more than 72?

oh I wish. :-(

I'm buying a roof box, speed isn't the issue, it's more about whether I'll need step ladders to load all her crap into it?
