Guy says he denies lots of e9x warranties for blown engines
He's a GTO owner who has his title as BMW Technical Specialist (24 years old) on the GTO board. Interesting that he mentions it is usually Dinan tunes. I have not heard of several blown engines getting denied in NJ. There is that many, or is their some embellishing going on?
"It's all fun and games for them till I decline the warranty on their blown engine. I see alot of E90 cases come through here with damaged, or completely blown N54 engines that usually have some sort of aftermarket software (usually a Dinan tune) running higher boost. Contrary to what a lot of people may believe, these motors are already running on the ragged edge out of the box. They can make good power at higher boost levels, but they just do not hold up well." http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=315940 |

So does this not apply to E92's or E93? Are you sure this guy is a BMW tech? If so then why does he only mention the E90? |

I assume he means e9x. All of them, maybe even including other N54 cars. I'm not sure he is a BMW tech, but he has stated that he works for BMW NA, and at 24 he could have gone through all the training. I would think that only a field engineer would make the final call on voiding a warranty and they would probably have many more years experience than someone 24 years old.

I tend to think he is embellishing the story. I think we would see many more posts here if it was wide spread, especially since many tuned E9x's find the tunes through this forum.

That's true. I haven't read any posts yet about a blown engine due to a tune. So I think the guy might be full off it or there were other reasons why the engine was blown but they just decided to pin it on the tune. I believe the fuel pump failures but not this. BMW never releases their cars with engine at full capacity. We all damn well know they can be pushed a lot more.

Doesn't sound right. I might as well say I'm a GTO tech and I've denied a lot of warranties on blown GTO's because GM makes shitty cars and is going out of business; doesn't make it true.

no manufacturer makes engines that run "on the ragged edge" out of the box...

Does seem interesting that a BMW employee would go online and put down his own companies product. If I did that where I work, they would have a huge problem with it.

Guys this is a 300 hp from a FI 3.0 Liter = 100 Hp/liter
Nowadays 100 Hp/liter from a N/A is not even that highly strung out of the box, let alone an FI motor... Heck the M3 with a NA engine has been making more than 100/hp for 2 generations now, (3 if you count the euro E36 M3) That guy is full of it |

Guy sounds like he bought a used GTO and is pissed off that he couldn't get a new 328 let alone a new 335, while still having wet dreams about the M3. I'm guessing he invested heavy in the GM stock too.

You have to look at who he's talking to - a GTO forum. He's just trying to give those people a warm fuzzy feeling about their cars. There's nothing inherently wrong with the GTO, it's just for a different type of enthusiast. They're fast enough with simple bolt ons, and might have better long-term durability at the 100+whp over stock mods level... In the end none of it matters because regardless of how much money you put into mods, there's always going to be someone out there with more cash and more power. But the more mods you have and the higher up the HP food chain you are, the less likely you are to run into one of those cars on the road at random.

IMHO, there's close to a 0% chance this is true.
There's a LOT of tuned N54 owners on this forum and I don't see a 'blown engine' thread. For context, check out the RX8club.com forum. The Renesis rotary has close to a 100% failure rate with aftermarket turbos (ask me how I know ). You won't have any problems finding myriad tales of woe on blown engines there, trust me. ...not seeing it here, and folks have been running tunes for 3+ years. Also, there's dynos of 500+ WHP on race gas & upgraded turbos. If the engine was 'at the ragged edge' doing 300 at the shaft, we'd be popping left and right at 400 WHP and wouldn't even be able to touch 500 wheel w/o 'that horrible sound'. |
