Transmission replaced

Took the car in for an oil change, taillight bulb holders replaced, and I mentioned that the car is sometimes hard to get into second gear (manual transmission) . Issue was when I went to put the car in second gear after being on the highway, the shifter would go into second but when you let the clutch out, it was still in neutral. If you pulled a little further it would "click" down again and finally go into gear. Outcome is = new transmission by BMW of NA's orders. Car only has 24k miles.

I wonder if the syncro's (sp?) were shot. You don't power shift the car from 1-2 do u?

No power shifting. Never had any kind of grinding either.

Hmm... I have a similar problem lately (started about 6 months ago) with my '06 325i... but with the first gear... I would put it in first, and when I let out the clutch, the shifter will pop back in neutral. Very weird... it only does this about 1 in 50 times... I figured it's going back (lease end) next week... so I'm not gonna worry about it... I hope the new '09 328xi e92 doesn't do the same thing

If the stick was in gear, and not engaging, then synchro's arent the issue. The gear is shot - which i likely why they're replacing it.

That makes no sense. they replaced your entire tranny for a worn synchro?

A synchro kept the gear from engaging, even when the lever was in the gate?

Apparently. BMW of NA said to just replace the transmission. They suspected 1-2 synchro and some device that is supposed to prevent gear changes when the clutch is not engaged. This is what the SA told me. Who knows what actually failed.
