Hi Steve,
Don't expect the DCT to be any better than the manual. Speaking from experience with the 335i DCT its not that refined. Think I prefered the ordinary auto box.
Anyway good luck with your new purchase. I'm sure you will let us know how you get on.

Not sure that the 335i has the same 'control' over the gearbox that the M3 has - by that I mean altering how 'harsh' the changes are and how long it hangs onto the gears? This is done by using the switch on the console. Manual has 5 settings and auto has it's own five settings.

I have my auto set on level 2 which is great for pottering around town, and when you dont want to change gear but I have manual mode set to level 5 where the changes are the quickest.

Not saying the DCT is faultless 'cos it is but on the whole, if you planted the throttle and banged through every gear using the paddles, you would have to be some driver to change a manual box as quickly IMO.

off topic a bit but I know what Steve means with the manual gearbox after having my auto 335i I was struggling a bit with the gears on my M3 especially going into reverse but I must say that now I ve driven it a few times I am a lot better now and its alot better with the v8 engine than in a maual 6 pot ,although I do miss the auto box for pottering around in the manual is great fun when you want to do some lets say sporty driving if you know what I mean ,I have got the changes down to more or less instant no probs .

It sounds like I've been lucky with my manual box as its completely broken in now and the changes are lovely and smooth. It was notchy in the first few thousand miles but I haven't experienced it for a long time now. Overall, I'm very pleased with my manual box but I have heard of a number of owners complaining about the notchiness.

Hopefully the DCT will keep your love affair with the E92 M3 alive for a bit longer Steve

Noob!! You cheeky f**ker!! Ive had more M3's than youve had hot dinners kiddo!! Besides, youve had your manual E46 M3 for donkeys years now and STILL cant drive it!!!!

I changed from manual to SMG on the E46 for the same reason Steve. The 6 speed gear box is hard work. I used to drive from Harrow to the City everyday and I'd have an aching left shoulder at the end of the day. Whilst SMG and DCT have their quirks after a while you learn them and how to get the most out of the gearbox. I really wished the quirky SMG was available on the E92 as in my view its the best thing since sliced bread and HDTV.
