Yes, the prevailing theory is that the charcoal layer is constricting a little. Your theory about paper being superior to oiled substrate is just a theory. I'm not worried about this filter damaging my expensive engine.

THE superior filter is actually made out of something called nonwoven textiles. I worked as a consultant to a company that made such filters for Toyota. NWT was used because the density of the open space can be controlled to a very tight specification. It had "good" flow characteristics and very high filtration levels.

BTW, people that compete and use oiled filter elements clean and reoil the filter regularly. Your theory that they will end up more stopped up is also just another theory. In actual fact it will depend on how often the owner cleans and oils it.

I DO agree that for the 335i and probably the 135i, there's no significant gain to be had.
