So it rates 18hp less at the engine compared to the 335i, according to BMW, but puts down about 40 less rear wheel HP then the 335i. So it looks like the 335i is indeed making about 320hp at the engine.
Sounds about right. 282 flywheel hp down to 232 rear wheel hp = 17.7% loss through drive train. 429 flywheel lbft down to 378 rear wheel lbft = 11.9% loss through drivetrain.

I know the 335d and 335i are obviously very different engines, but simply applying the two %-ages above to the 335i engine's rear wheel figures of 275hp and 300 lbft gives us flywheel figures of 324hp and 336 lbft

Cool

Momma says dat horsepower depends on the kind of horse you usin

lol. it boils down to what makes you more happy to drive. I've driven both cars and teh 335 makes me all tingly inside. And since I'm not interested in racing it for now, the numbers don't matter. besides 335 or m3... both are faster and better crafted than most cars on the road in the US. In this holiday season lets be thankful for two amazing sport coupes and the fact that the 335 has a magic gnome that hands you your seatbelt when you're ready to drive.

That's what the m3 doesn't have, seatbelt-gnome power!

The 335i engine has 2 turbos, direct injection, and a few other tweaks, and is 3.0 litre... but yet, it makes very close to the same hp/litre as the N/A m3 engine? This is why the tuning potential of this engine is HUGE.
Great prediction over 10 years ago.

Whats funny is, that 90% of people that have spent any amount of real time in the 335i state that its underrated... and people that dont want to beleive it, havent really spent much time, and dont really have any valid arguments(like the post above, show some proof!)... but there has been so much proof of it being underrated...

Multiple dynos have been posted that show the car close within the same wheel horsepower results as an m3, shiv even said the cars were only 10WHP apart... so 285whp on an m3 = 333bhp...

if you do the math, saying the 335i is only 300bhp, and a conservitive dyno puts it at 275 WHP... that means bmw must have managed to make a driveline that has only ~6% loss???

Either way, the numbers dont lie... so you have 2 options...
1. BMW worked miracles and created a driveline to end all drivelines, that only has 6% power loss!!!
2. BMW decided to underrate the 335i engine as not to hurt current m3 sales.

I pick #2, and think it has between 320-330 bhp
Wasn't the single turbo 335i 300 hp but put out more like 260. they all used to drop to the other models' bhp? The F30 seems to be in the 265-275 based on model. e90 328i with 3 stage, air box and active headers is everything a single turbo 335i was.
