I just hit 8k Miles on my car and Im just wondering when am I supposed to have my first Oil Change. Ive been checking the Oil on the dashboard and its still close to "OK". So should I just wait until it goes down....or what.

Whatsup karod. which oil monitor are you checking? the easiest one to get to is actually the oil level monitor that tells you how much oil you have left. There is another one that tells you how much longer you can go until you need a change. Does your "ok" have a bar beneath it kind of like your life in a videogame?

BMW won't do it for you until the computer says you're ready - which is usually around 15k miles. This is always a topic of debate around here, but some prefer to do their own "in-between" oil changes between free services at the dealer.

Personally, I have faith in BMW's R&D who created these cars. When my car says it needs something, I will take it to the dealer. Unless you're really keeping the car forever (or tracking it regularly), I see no reason to do anything extra.

That's the computerized dip stick.

That's the equivalent of a dipstick, not when the car needs an oil change.

When you start the car, you will see a mileage reading which counts down to 0 when you're ready for service) This is what decides whether or not the car needs an oil change. Once it gets to 0, your dash will say "service" very clearly when you start the car.

There is another oil check in the interface the bmw guy at roadshow showed me. You can go in and it tells you about how long you have until you need a new oil change specifically i do believe. could be wrong i havent checked since then its not time for me yet. It might be in the manual

I contacted my dealer about this issue and he told me that i need to just add a quart of oil when the dash tells me to at around 15k miles and that i shouldn't have to worry about a change until i take it for maintainance. At the rate i'm going, my car will probably have 20k miles at the end of the first year of the lease. I drive alot

You're 100% spot on. That is the oil change indicator. IF and that is only IF you doing the oil change every 15k miles than the Service indicator and the oil indicator will most likely show you the same mileage. If you change the oil more often (like every 5k miles) and the indicators will not be showing the same mileage. Also the numbers will be different based on how hard you drive the car. The maintenace interval will always be at around 15k miles but the oil change interval can varry based on driving conditions.

since you asked this question, you must care for your car. You're supposed to change it after the break in(1200-1500 miles), then every 6 months after that
