BT codes help

I notice on cold days when the temps are 40f or less I am ending up with limp modes. I reset them and then get these codes again. I dont get the SES light I only get the 1/2 engine light. If anyone know why im getting these codes and what to do about them I would appriciate it.

Thanks.

Codes:
2A87 Outlet Vanos variable cam control test
3100 Boost-Pressure control deactivation
29D2 Misfiring, Cylinder 6

My boost pressure is only around 13.5psi.

My boost pressure is only around 13.5psi.
This was what I got from my first scan with the BT:

Engine - N54
Current Fault Codes
________________________________________

29D2
29D2 Misfirings, cylinder 6
Error will cause a warning light
Error is not currently present
Test conditions have been completed
Short circuit or signal interruption

________________________________________

2A82
2A82 Inlet-Vanos variable cam control test
Error will cause a warning light
Error is not currently present
Test conditions have been completed

________________________________________

3100
3100 boost-pressure control, deactivation
Error will not cause a warning light
Error is not currently present
Test conditions have been completed

________________________________________

The second one is the one that I need to understand. The first one is something I learned how to avoid it (I mean the corresponding limp and the thrown code) by simply increasing the upshift softening value of my V3.2.
The second one corresponds to a very weird limp I am getting every now and then while I am cruising after let's say a hefty 20/30 seconds since I had few full boost pulls, pulls which didn't get me a limp or anything like that.
The limp is weird because when the half lit engine light shows off the power's not cut, it gets cut shortly afterwards.
Therefore if anybody chimes in about "2A82 Inlet-Vanos variable cam control test" I would truly appreciate that

Thats crazy!
So for the 29D2 just increase the upshift softness?

Im curious to see what is causing the vanos fault, I thought it was related to not having enough oil but I just had an oil change and still got it.

I wonder how many other people are getting these codes. The BT scan tool is totally worth it.

I am getting- 2A87 Outlet Vanos variable cam control test

I have had three limps since I bought the car usually on the 3-4 upshift under WOT. Once was without my tune, though.

I cleared the codes and am going to see if I can replicate.

I had the same codes with and without a tune. In the end the dealer replaced one cam shaft, cam shaft ledge, vanos pulse wheel, Both Vanos and other bits...Car is running fine now *knock on wood*

Good Luck

Yep, man. With the default settings of upshift softening left to "5" I could only run a Stage0 map without getting misfires. Guess stock spark plugs can't cope with such V3.2 default settings (I doubt they might already be marginal since I had them replaced 10k miles ago during last service). With such value up to "10" I am back to Stage3 (with a vengeance ). Now I'll lower that "10" until I find out which is the limit and set it just a step higher than that for good

Im curious to see what is causing the vanos fault, I thought it was related to not having enough oil but I just had an oil change and still got it.

fingers crossed then, I am actually down on oil level. Hope it's just that since I never ever had such a weird limp not to mention such code thrown.

Well I figured out what the issue was with my car:
2A87 Outlet Vanos variable cam control test

There is actually a TSB on it. The Vanos selinods get stuck. I had them taken out and cleaned along with the oil passage ways. I was surprised when the tech at BMW said that this was an increasing problem that he was seeing.

As for the 29D2 Misfiring, Cylinder 6. Andres was right, I just had to move the shifting softness up to 10 and I no longer had an issue.

The dealerships dont really fix anything it seems like. They will only do the main stuff like rotors and what not. Should I goto another dealership maybe?

Very Helpful! Thanks, Vince! When you took the car in, did you just mention half engine lights or did you out right say code 2A87?

My car was out of warrenty, so I had to pay out of pocket. They first charged me a $140 diagnostic fee. Found exactly what I told them. (DUH!) They then charged me $440 to do the cleaning.

Did any of you feel like your car was "bogged" down with the VANOS issue? As in it was not running as fast as it should be? This is the second time I have thrown this code or one like it and my car has been fixed before. Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the reply! Why do you think it is tune related. Feel free to PM me if you want too.

I do believe the two times I have thrown this code I have been running a JB+

Man, I had both solenoids to be cleaned up (Vanos intake and Vanos exhaust) and they charged me 41 only (approx 50$) since it took them 45 minutes only to ge the job done. Maybe you should talk to your lawyer about those 440$ you were charged!
BTW the car runs perfectly now
