Paul,

I think that 100 ft lbs is too much. From what I've read, the recommended torque is 88 ft lbs for the M12 lug bolts (which E90s have) on dry threads.

If you have better info, please let me know.

torque spec should also depend on what wheels you have....

ie. forged light weight wheels should be torqued more ~100-110.

88 ft-lbs is recommended for the 3-series. I use 90 ft-lbs though as my brand of torque wrench only show graduation by 10s... i.e. 80-90-100.

I have been doing the swap on 2 cars for the past 12 years with no issues. Buy good tools the first time, they will last you a life time.

Hi, I missed the Canadian Tire deal a few weeks back and am currently looking for a low profile jack. As no Costco near here has them (they did a month ago, damn it!), I stopped by my local Walmart to see if they had anything. They had a Torin Black Jack 2.5 ton for $57 (which I believe is essentially what Costco had recently, but in red). Didn't buy it, but it looks like this:



Not having bought a jack before, my concern is the saddle, or rather lack of rubber saddle (jack pad) on this and other jacks I've seen. As it's not flat, it looks like it'd be a problem on the 335i's side jack points, and also therefore, I assume, with a jack adapter like Soni's.

Can someone confirm? Will a hockey puck on top of it be sufficient?

I phoned Torin to ask if they sold the jack pad separately and the answer was "no". When I asked why some of their models have the flat pads and others don't, I was told "That's the way they come. The jacks are made in China".

So then I asked if they could tell me where I could buy a Torin jack locally here in Canada, (other than Walmart and Costco) so that I might perhaps find a different model, ie: one with a pad. "NorthernTool" was her answer. My reply: "They're not in Canada, I don't want to spend $50 on shipping. Where else?". "AutoZone". "Costco". "Walmart, do you have those in Canada?". "Best Buy".

What utterly useless replies!

UPDATE: I ended up buying this jack from Walmart for $57, and while it's not the best jack ever, it is low-profile, it's rated for 2.5 tons (not the bare minimum 1.5t like some other more expensive jacks) and it does the job.

As for the hockey puck adapter - haven't tried the front/rear jack points yet but a single uncut puck shouldn't pose any problem, as for the side jack points it's low enough that I can stack 2 pucks on the saddle and still fit it under.

While putting on winter tires, am putting the OEM mudfaps on the car (ordered those from the US.. worked out cheaper than local dealer). Got the fronts installed yesterday and will be doing the rears on Sunday.

Although my Michelin 3 1/2 ton jack is not low profile I got around it by driving the wheel I'm going to change over a piece of 2"x6" lumber. That gives me enough space to roll the jack underneath. Of course I have to leave the lumber underneath when I want to remove the jack.

and wrap some electrical tape around the socket for extra protection against metal to metal contact.

Noone's replied yet - re: Post#50 - is it worth buying a jack with a saddle like that, or will it be useless? Hockey puck on top is ok for side jack points and front/rear?

Thanks. Want to buy something tomorrow. This looks like best price on a jack that'll fit under the BMW and that can lift > 1.5tons.
