nav voice entry East vs. West - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I live in Chicago where every street is a North, South, East or West. When I try to enter an address by voice recognition, it only recognizes the street name, not the direction. So, I've been trying to enter my friends address on for example West Chicago Avenue, but it only recognizes Chicago Avenue and by default programs east chicago Avenue, giving me the wrong location. When I enter the info through the i-drive controller, it list E Chicago Avenue and W Chicago Avenue so I am able to get the correct address. How do I get the voice recognition to accept a N, S, E, W?

Good question - that applies to Manhattan also. I guess I haven´t spoken any addresses to the system yet for east or west streets.

How do you speak an address to the system? If you tell me how I'll try it out on a North/South street and tell you how it went.

You say the listing has the direction abbreviated. Have you tried pronouncing it simply as "E", "W", "S", or "N"?

press the voice button, say "new destination", "enter address", "street".

I tried that, it ignored the"E, "W", "S", "N"; it just recognized the street name afterwards.

I just tried this with "North Harbor Island Drive"-- it also just recognizes "Harbor Island Drive".

Never tried it on the iDrive but my Garmin uses Navteq maps and I assume the database is the same. This may or may not help.

When searching, you do not enter the street prefix or the suffix. So, for example, E. Lombard Street is entered into a Garmin as just 'Lombard' after you have narrowed down the State and (maybe) city and entered the street number.

The Garmin then comes up with somthing like:

Lombard (St, Rd, Blvd)

Click that and then you get something like:

4367 E. Lombard St.
4367 W. Lombard St.

Then you select the one you want.

So...try putting in the street number before the road itself.

YMMV.

The problem in this aspect of voice destination input has been isolated to the 2007-1 NA DVD. The problem has been corrected with 2007-2, which should be available in the latter part of Feb.

I've already asked whether the DVD will be updated under warranty given the problem.
