Steering wheel...bit "heavy"

Alright, I've been driving a 320 d estate and noticed that the steering wheel is much "lighter" than my 335i...is this normal?....is it because my 335i got bigger tyres?....

Plus the bigger tyres etc.

This is where it gets 'dangerous' comparing other models in the same range.

I wouldn't worry tbh Kevin, it's a good thing the 335i steering is heavier - as it should be. The car is quite powerful and a precise steering set up with good feedback is what BMW do well on their cars.

If that 320d you had was a recent model, then I think jj will be right about the ED aspect.

The overly light steering was the first thing I noticed in the 330d I'm driving now.

Thank goodness the 335i does not have this particular 'feature'

This is due to the Efficient Dynamics Electric Steering. The 335i system is hydraulic.

I noticed the same thing when I got my 330i - much heavier steering than my previous A4 (I'd even forked out for some fancy feature to make it speed sensitive 'cos the dealer reckoned it would be easier to sell on - what BS that turned out to be) - however now I'm used to it I much prefer it - and the feedback it gives.

Thats it.

335i steering is very 'heavy' after you have got used to a shopping trolley for a while.

The power steering on my wifes Grande Espace feels like there is no friction between tyre and road at all by comparison. Cant tell whats going on tho..

Is the E91 new? Might it not have servotronic as this became an option in March?

My car has electric power steering but it also has servotronic and there is nothing light about it at all.

If you drove it back to back against one of the models with hydraulic steering I think you would feel a significant difference.

It's very noticeable.
