Cool man! People tend to hate on ingenuity which is the first step in many of the lighting mods available now. Great post!

Now if you could do something like this to make HID angel eyes work for that price!

As a matter of fact I am working on that as we speak. Unfortunatley the capacitor trick does not work for the angels I have found out but I have 2 other wiring schemes I am devising and will surely let everyone know of the outcome!!

what did you use to hide the capacitor? i would assume it would get wet or something?

Capacitor is ok in the elements. I covered soldering and leads off cap with heat shrink.

sorry that I have to ask. What is the purpose of the capacitor? Is it to prevent it from throwing an error code? I thought people always use resistors for that.

I wonder if you could apply this mod to the rear fogs? I would love to be able to blind people that tailgate me.

Capacitor stores excess power and distributes as needed from the source requesting it. Issue with BMW when switching to HID's is the HID bulb requires much less power to light than a typical halogen bulb. With less power needed our computer detects that it is consuming less than normal power and it throws an error code and also sends pulses repeatedly to ensure it is accurate as being bulb out situation (hence the flickering members speak of). Well when you add a capacitor it stores the excess power tricking the computer into thinking it is a normal situation and sends only amount needed for HID ballast to function in turn eliminating the error and pulse situation

I have no idea. Im pretty sure this is why US spec cars did not get this option lol

Thanks for the explaination. One more question, shouldn't the capacitor be installed upstream of the ballast? Also, capacitors have resistence only when it is being charged, so if you turn the fog on, off then on again quickly, would that trigger an error code since the capacitor would have no time to discharge and therefore, has no resistence when you turn it on the second time around?

Yes your are correct and it is. The harness the capacitor is integrated with plugs into the factory fog lamp plug.

Not sure. In theory you are probably correct but I dont think it is regular practice for people to toggle lights on and off as you are explaining. But also if doing quickly as explained the capacitor will retain a bit of the energy so im not sure but again highly doubtful this should even be a problem unless your trying to do a light show with your E9x

looking for some 3K HIDs as well, but for 9006 bulb setup because I have Mtech kit.

Are DDM Tuning or whatever the name is, the only ones that offer the HID in 55W? I believe the Mtec HID kit is 35W, and that's the one I've been looking at.

TIA

hey, I'm not trying to be an ass... I like to talk about these things as I'm a geek like that.

Yea, I agree that shouldn't be a problem. But if it does, I think a resistor inline with the capacitor might just do it.

No I wasnt critisizing just making a joke. I play by the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule and the method is working for me. One isue with resistors and our cars is that sometime the polarity is reversed and when that happens resistors go KABOOM
