Really? I still can't get my head around the difference in price between the sedan and the coupe.

Also, when I try to get insurance the most they'll offer for cover is around $52k - is that not the true price? Are used BMW's always worth more than the insurer will quote for???

Generally insurance companies will work out a market estimate range using one of the valuation guides (Glass's, Redbook) which take into account the original price of the car less depreciation, wear and tear based on age of car, etc, plus allowances for optional equipment. This is obviously a generalised estimate.

If the insurance quotes already include all of the optional extras, then I would guess that used car prices have probably taken a bigger hit in the last couple of years due to the financial crisis.

Some insurers offer both Market Value and Agreed Value policies. However, if your proposed "agreed" value is greater than their market value range (which it is), then you may have to get a proper valuation from an authorised (by the insurer) valuer. But this is usually done for vintage cars and the like.

The car you're looking at is technically a 2006 car even though it was 1st registered in 2007. So for depreciation purposes it is 4 years old. On the plus side, 20000kms on the odo is very low compared to the average 3 year old.

If the insurer is saying $52K, then thats pretty good.

Consider that Redbook values a nice 323i coupe 2006 at $43K. Now add on the sunroof and PDC, and it brings it up around $47K. Now add a little for the ultra low kms travelled, and it brings it up around $50K.

Your purchase price of $56K, if thru a dealer would include around $5K GST, so all up i think the price is about right.

That of course wouldn't stop starting negotiation at $50K.
