oh sorry, thought that slang phrase was common.... it just means that they made a lame excuse cuz they didn't feel like fixing it or think they needed to under your warranty because its such an expensive job.

you can always try writing a letter to BMW North America if they don't do it and complain that something like this wasn't put into a recall because its been a problem since 2006

Do you mind posting a video of the "normal" engine sounds? I just watched Patsfan123's vid and it kinda sounds like my car, but it doesn't have that odd/loud extra tick that your old video had, so I'm thinking it might just be normal valvetrain noise?

Dropped off car today: oil change, brake fluid flush, replacing peeling interior handle, and replacing adjusters. Hopefully this solves the ticking, but if not I guess cylinder head replacement... I'll keep you guys posted.

Here's my engine, now "normal", since the head replacement. Very slight "normal" ticking still exists, though much much quieter.

My thinking or the ticking issue and the reason the new HVA's are not fully rectifying the problem is that the HVAs pull in air on start up. The issue I think is not that the compressed adjuster at shutdown is bleeding down but what happens when the engine is started-up with an adjuster that has bled down. I think it is impossible to believe that the HVAs won't bleed down over a period of time.

For instance.

The HVA is under load at shutdown it bleeds down slightly. The oil leaks into the head and drains from the head to the crankcase. Remember the HVA is not cycling so no air is being introduced in, just some oil has leaked out. However upon startup the HVA begins to cycle and needs to be refilled since it has lost some oil. However oil pressure has not reached the head and the HVA pulls in air probably almost immediately. If the engine is run long enough, the air will be exchanged with oil and all is well. However with short trips the air is not all fully evacuated from the HVA when the engine is shut down again. The vicious cycle continues with these short runs, maybe or maybe not all on the same HVA. The valve in the revised head I believe retains oil in the head for the HVAs to pull back in after they bleed down versus air. I don't believe the valve holds oil pressure or does it keep the HVAs from bleeding down.

However; the one thing that is confusing is that is it always is just one HVA in the rear that makes the noise. This is common with almost all situations.

Also we don't hear multiple HVAs ticking.

- Maybe it is due to resonance and that makes it sound like the ticking is coming from the rear of the engine.
- Or the engine shuts down roughly at the same crank position, which is doubtful but could be tested.
- Or the rear HVAs are closer to a oil drain passage in the head so they are mostly affected.
- Or the rear HVA is the furthest from the oil supply thus last to get fresh oil on start-up. The others would tick however they get oil to them fast enough that they don't pull in much air. I bet this is the case.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks! That's pretty much how my car sounds. Guess I don't have the ticking issue. 42k mi and doesn't look like it was done before either according to the service history.

My 06 E91 last week started intermittent ticking at 49k mi., sometimes on cold start, sometimes not. The dealer replaced all exhaust HVAs today under CPO warranty, although the ticket mentions "goodwill." Engine is now silent and my fingers are crossed that that's the end of it.

tik tok noise

Hi guys I'm new to this forum and my 07 328i has also started doing the clicking noise. It doesn't do all the time, mostly when i haven't driven it in a while. I video recorded it on my iphone because I know when you take your vehicle to the dealer the problem magically disappears. I have my appointment this 24th ill see what happens but I have been also told by friends that it sounds like the lifters. On the oil issue, it seems that my oil sensor has broken because it wont give me a result. The bright side is that this is not my only vehicle and as such I don't drive it a lot. Ill keep you all posted to the results from my dealer wish me luck!

Jgcdude1, can you post a video of your ticking noise? I'd just like to hear a sample of them. Thanks!

Not my video, but still N52 engine, and the ticking is the same as mine: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=320299&page=2

My HVA were replaced yesterday and I picked up today. Cold start no noise so far. Unfortunately the SES light was on and they didn't realize it, so bringing it back Wednesday for an O2 sensor plus they forgot to fix my peeling door handle.

That's definitely one that would be a good candidate for a new head.

Wow, a new head? That sounds bad! I also don't drive my vehicle much either. Mostly on the weekends. I have noticed that when I don't drive it regularly the sound is more frequent. I will have to see what the dealer says.

I also noticed my oil sensor seems to have "retired" because I don't get a reading on my OBC. Now its a waiting game until Wednesday for my appointment. Thanks for the info everyone.

New cylinder head work completed Monday. Hopefully, that's the end of the noise. Fine so far.

Dealer handled the entire issue very well, thankful there were no headaches like some of you had (or are still having).

Hey guys so i took my vehicle in today, my SA told me that it was the lifters. They are going to replace all of them. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

However i had another issue come up, while driving it seemed like all electrical systems blanked out for a split second. Then i received an error message on my dash indicating abs then DTC symbol came on. At the same time a yellow brake warning light came on. Has anyone encountered this? I already took it to my dealer.

Had both of my O2 sensors replaced and grab handle tomorrow. No ticking on cold start with updated HVAs so far. Burning smell when i start the car, but that might be some spilled oil or grease from the techs, they also didn't clip in the black piece that hangs over the engine. Engine runs smoother and heats up quicker than before, might be from driving 15 miles with bad O2s, maybe it ran rich and has some carbon build up in the exhaust. I'm going to look over the car tomorrow morning to make sure the techs didn't forget to button anything else up.
