I've been dealing with this problem too...i can lock my doors with the key fob but cannot unlock them after an extended period of time...i have to use the key but if i unlock the doors with the key then lock them with the key fob and then try to unlock them right away with the key fob it works...weird and it only happens randomly, actually most of the time its when its crappy weather out, when i want to get in my car quickly

WTF!! FML!!!

Hello All,

So I have had bad luck with this BMW. I have had 2 motors go out for the windows and now this.

I am taking my car to the dealership tomorrow. If they try and mess with me I will be very upset. This is obviously a known problem and should be a recall.

I will follow up with an answer later

I was locked out of my car yesterday. I put my suit jacket with my key in the back seat, shut the door, freaking car locks all 4 doors right when the door shuts. BMW Assist unlocked my doors for me after a phone call.

Good News

Well.... today I went in and told them that I did research and I wanted things replaced and they are going to replace what needs to be replaced.

I am very pleased and glad this happened when the car was still under warranty.

I had this problem back in October, car is out of warranty. Replacing the fuse seemed to work at least temporarily - but then two weeks ago i placed my key in the dash and hit start - all power then went out in car. no lights, no locks, no horn, couldn't even get key out of dash. Next day i come home from work, and the tailights are on in the car and it starts right up. Next morning, car is dead again. Come home from work that night and now the dash lights are on but nothing else. Car starts and continues to work for a about a week. I replaced the battery, then the issue resurfaces, this time while out with my kids. Had car towed to Open Road BMW in Edison, NJ who charged me for 2 hours of diagnostic time ($270 - yikes!), and a grand total of $1700 to replace the junction box in the dash. My understanding is that there is some sort of juntion box for the car's factory security system, and now I'm wondering if the lock and power failure issues are related?

just happened to me this morning, same thing, but also my dash switched from KM to Miles and temp from C to F, really freaking me out, scheduled an appointment for 11 am with dealer.

i wonder if it has to do with the broken window i had few days ago, some ass*ole broke my rear driver side window and i had to get it replaced. could they cause any issues to the actuator?

this is a known and all too common problem.
happened to me also.

one or more of the actuators becomes faulty and draws too much current thus popping the fuse. When this happens the only way to unlock the car is with the manual key on the driver's side.

Replacing just the fuse does not fix the problem, just a symptom of the problem.

same problem. replaced the fuse and disconnected the battery. it reset. lets see how long before it repeats. the only door that worked inside or out was the drivers door. BIG SAFETY ISSUE!!

Thumbs down Door Lock Actuators

Just an FYI for those who want to tackle this themselves. The cost for one door lock Actuator including labor was $700. Rather expensive I think and I am out of warranty. The dealer told me 3.5 hours labor for one! BMW service bulletin reccomends replacing both front. The dealer told me if it was his car to do one at a time.

My rear right passenger door doesn't unlock with the fob or the central control on the dash but it locks just fine even with the remote key. Is it the fuse or the actuator that needs to be replaced?

Richard, check if the door pin is bent(it happened to my front passenger when replacing speakers) which might prevent it from opening

I have a 2006 325i. and I just had this problem yesterday and replacing the fuse only worked for one day.
I sent in to dealer today but I am out of warranty.
I am guessing a 1k ~ 2k cost for me with this known problem.

Is there responsibility that BMW should take since this is a very common problem for E90?
Or is there something I can tell the dealer so they can solve this in a less costly way?
Will I be better off taking to other car shops?

Thanks,

Thanks,
have you recieved you car back? if so what did they end up doing and how much did it run you?

i found myself stuck with this problem this morning. after a couple of hours of freaking out and stressing myself sick i found some sites that all refer back to fuse 57. im going to try the suggestion of change it from 15 to 20 today after work and hopefully that works. otherwise i'll have to look for an idep service center.
