peeling shift knob trim

I've got a 2007 CPO 328i automatic (29k) and the aluminum trim on the top of the shift knob is peeling up a bit near the front where it meets the leather. You can't really see it but you can feel it whenever you grab the knob. Do you all think I can get that replaced under warranty, or would they consider that to be a wear item? I'd not care except that you can feel a rough edge that reminds me that it's there.

HAD the same issue - Traded the car!

I had a 328i auto - which I think the transmission was really bad - very whine oriented. Every time I grabed the shifter it reminded me of only the things I disliked about the car (scuff or plastic cut at the end of the silver head):

1. Auto tranny - had driven newer models and they were different - mine was overly noisy & really missed the control that the manual brings & fun.

2. I failed to get the Xenons and I looked for costly replacements - settled for MTECs was was quite happy.

3. RFT - swapped them out for RE760s - better but believe that the 3 seires just eats tires.

4. For versatility - the split folding back seat -- wow how I needed this opt.

5. Heated seats - on a cold day - how much I missed them from my prior car.
.
.
So - I just traded the car for a 335i without NAV but it has a manual, split rear seat, heated seats and Xenons --- but it does have NEW quite RFTs for now. It even has the Ipod USB - find it neat to have - but it drops out often -- will see the dealershipnfor possible software update.

Plus, I just pulled off the shifter and e-brake boot in prep for the NEW M-Shifter / Boot & E handle - comming tomorrow from Tischer.

I do have the xenons and heated seats, so at least I'm not missing that.
I would have liked to get the split folding rear seat, but very few 328i's coming off lease in St. Louis seem to have been sold with the cold weather package.

I guess I'll ask when I'm in the dealer for my next service. If they decline to cover it, I'll just order a new one from Tischer and replace it myself.

I do agree about the transmission, however. The auto 6 in our highlander is better.

It's covered under warranty. Do a search, a number of members--including me--have had it replaced.

Mine peeled after a year, they replaced it with a current knob, no questions.

Won't hurt saying that you saw it was a common issue.

Thanks, good to know. I searched the forum but no pics of the replacement. Is the replacement similar or have they redesigned it?

Shifter

I had the the same issue with my shifter, BMW is aware of the problem with the rough edge on some of the shifters. They replaced mine without a problem. The replacement shifter is much nicer that the ones in the 2007's.

They will replace it with an identical part, pretty much no questions asked. It's a common issue. At absolute worst, you can buy a new one for under $100 and install it in under 5 minutes.

I purchased my CPO almost 6 months ago and mine was peeling too. I took it to the dealer 1 week after I purchased it and they told me it is not covered under warranty. That ticked me off since I just bought it and it had 42k on it. Still under factory warranty. I ended up and purchased the Alcantara shift knob and ebrake. I like it much better.

Quick update- took my car in for an oil change and mentioned the shift knob problem. They replaced under warranty no questions asked. The new one is a bit bigger and has has a somewhat different shape. The leather feels a bit nicer too, and there is less aluminum trim. Overall, I think its a bit nicer than the stock 2007 one. I'm just happy they replaced it under warranty.

Your lucky they would not replace mine so I purchased the Alcantara shifter. I think what you got looks just like the Alcantara version just with different material.
