335 spare tire option
I am running non-runflats and wanted a cheap spare tire and wheel. People have mentioned the leatherz.com doughnut but with the fitment kit needed for the e90's its $305 and the shipping is $25 for a total of $330.
I spoke to tire rack and did the circumfrence calcs and found that a 225/45/17 tire will fit with a 17*7.5 wheel. It is a pretty perfect circumference match for the stock sports package setup on the 335 and is also within tolerance (1% circum. diff on front, 2% on back) to use with 19's (265*30*19 rear, 235/35/19 front). At tirerack a 225/45/17 fusion hri (a Bridgestone brand) is $68 and a sports edition A7 wheel is $104. With mounting, balancing, and shipping it will make a good spare for under $190. Why the fusion tire? It's asymmetrical (not directional) so you can use it on both sides of the car. A tire cover is probably around $10 at the nearest autoparts store and the extended jack kit is about $115 + shipping from tischerbmw.com. Part number 71106773536 (The jack kit is really nice). I understand people who just use a mobility kit, but if I'm on a 200 mile drive to the beach through prime corn and chicken farms in Delaware, I don't want to be out there for hours waiting if it's a major hole in the tire, when I could throw on a spare and keep moving. tire: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....&tireModel=HRi wheel: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...FT&qty_front=1 Tischer site for entering jack kit part number: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...&siteid=214336 A good tire circumference calculator: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html Item Description Availability Qty. This is some great information!!! I am also running non-run flats and frequently drive long distances without service for miles. I will be looking into this too.

In this case a 17 inch wheel with a height of 45 is very close to equal an 18 with a height of 40. See the circumference calc I posted a link to. If I had a flat on mine I would be running a 19 for 3 and 17 for one wheel, but because the circumference is close and the use is temporary it works for a spare tire.

No space for the spare, you have to take up trunk space. When just riding around town I will have a conti repair kit/pump in the trunk. If I am going out of town I will throw in the spare and jack kit.

Yeah, that leatherZ kit is money. $245 for spacesaver (T125/80-17) plus $60 for fitment kit (RE spacer and longer lugs). Ridiculous
.I think purchasing a single wheel & tire was an excellent choice. Like the OP said it's not like you carry the spare everywhere. Only when you feel the need for it. Might sound crazy but nothing says you can't pick a real nice wheel like a BBS or VOLK for a spare . |

scott,
I'm kinda stupid to even mention it. The only reason is a while ago I was in your same shoes and ended up doing the math. I believe it's 2% on Front and 1% on Back since the rears overall dia. is smaller. I'm just reassuring people that yes it's perfectly within tolerance. Actually, 225/45-17 is a stock tire size. 19 x 25.4 = 482.6 (F) 235 x .35 = 82.25 82.25 + 482.6 + 82.25 = 647.1 (R) 265 x .30 = 79.50 79.50 + 482.6 + 79.50 = 641.6 17 x 25.4 = 431.8 (S) 225 x .45 = 101.25 101.25 + 431.8 + 101.25 = 634.3 |

Bump, great info. Is anybody running these wheels all around?
It seems like a good idea for a cheap winter tire setup and then carry one of your summer wheels in the back on long trips and vice versa in the summer time.

Only problem with this idea is a full-size wheel and tire pretty much eats up all of your trunk space.
With the compact spare, you still have a useful trunk. You pays yer money and takes yer choice! |

![]() I will try to check how much space I have left once I get my tires and then put them on my OEM 17". If its really bad then that might be out of question.
