Cruise control dynamics...

I just noticed that if you pull the cruise control lever to decelerate and then go past the resistance for a continued deceleration the cruise controller actually applies the brakes to achieve your desired cruising speed instead of coasting to your speed.

I was cruising at 75 and decided to slow down to 55 in a speed trap area and just pulled the cruise control lever to get it down to 55. I was expecting it to coast but it actually actively applied the brakes to get to 55. I know it was the brakes because the rpm stayed constant so the controller was not downshifting the tranny to slow down.

Nice - never saw that before.

Being a metric car, it drops my speed by 10km/h each time you pull it past the resistance point and 1km/h up to the resitance point. What about mph cars? Would it be 5mph? I think 10mph would be quite dramatic.

On my manual transmission car, I like how I can shift gears (up/down) and the cruise control continues to work. Most other cars cancel the cruise once you tap the clutch (or brake). This comes in handy when you are driving up a steep hill and need to downshift.

Yes, it definitely applies the brakes. Also, if the car is on a forward incline, the brakes will be applied as needed to keep you at the set speed.
