Has anyone actually had an overheat situation? They must have tested this engine extensively because it is now going into the new 5 series as well.

I've run HOT rotary motors before but never anything running this close to the 300 degree mark like I saw recently on mine at just a tad over 260 deg. without "spirited driving" and not even close to high ambient temps...

looked up article...

It was their turbo diesels that had the issue. Not the 335 or other gasoline engine bmw.

My friend got a 335i, he said he changed his oil to ENEOS 5W-40 and dropped the temperature 15 degrees.

for me,
normal driving, fully warmed up(25min) = 220-230F
hard driving on a 3 hour trip = 255F (highest i have seen)

i do NOT have the air-to-oil cooler

This is interesting. It seems BMW high performance oil they use at the dealers causes the turbos to run hotter - even though it is the reccomended oil by BMW.

I would be weary to swtich to a 5W-40 when the engine is designed to run 10W-40 (or 30?) even if it makes it run cooler.

My engine seems to run VERY hot as well. Hit 255 degrees today in city driving with some pretty spirited driving (rpms in excess of 5k). The temp seems to just keep climbing, I eventually got worried and shut it down.

I did an early oil change also at the dealership, wonder if that has to do with anything.

5W-40 means it has the same temperature starting point as the 5W-30 while has a capability to protect up to a higher temperature then the 30. So if anything, you're getting more protection.

Mine has 200 miles on it, and runs 235-240 under most regular driving conditions.

I thrashed it for approx 20 minutes on some twisting roads in the hills this morning (so much for the break in) and saw it briefly touch 265 right after I started the cooldown. Five minutes driving 60 mph in a straight line and she was back at 235 again. Outdoor temp was 67

I have the AT and do not have the extra air/oil cooler (despite a 1/2007 build date). I checked the stock at the local dealer and none of the cars with AT and ZSP appear have the extra cooler.

I've also heard if you got 335 AT, it goes into limp mode when temp hits 300. These are from the guys that have taken it to the track and really drove it hard.

Running the same as everyone else, with ~350 miles on the odo.

I just ran through some of my photos from the 3er Driving Event last Sept. I can't make it out clearly, but the pic my friend took while I was driving the 335 shows the temp at around 240ish.

That's a car that had only 200 or so miles on it, and those were purely hard driven miles. We were one of the last stops on their route. It was the second day of runs and it was probably 90+ degrees outside.

Today I hit a high point of ~245, this was me going up a 6 story parking structure in first gear at about 15mph the whole way w/o stopping. After I got out and got back on the highway, it came down to about 220, where it always would be.

I've noticed that in the last couple of days, where the SoCal temperature is in the 80-90 degree range, the oil level is a bit higher than last week where the temperature was barely touching the 70s.

Picus, was it all of the manual transmissions have it or all of the manual transmissions with the Sport package have the cooler? I know for a fact that my manual/sport pkg has it.

335i Sedan, no air oil cooler. I was running 240-245ish when fully warmed up. Last couple of days my car has been running significantly cooler. I'm not sure if there is a corrleation or not but I removed my front plate frame 2 days ago. See this thread.

Again, i have no idea if there is a cause and effect but my car is definitely running cooler the last 2 days. I will have to see if it holds up. Next I am planning on removing the finishing rods to see if that helps as well. Anyone know how to remove them short of taking off the bumper cover or just breaking them off?

Just for grins can the sedan folks list whether or not they have a front plate frame on?

I have a 6 MT

I have a 6mt and my temps are at 245-250 driving like a turtle being that I am still in break in period.

If those are the temps with an oil cooler, I can only imagine what the temps will be when I track the car.
