Just to add to the n55 pics... here's the new DME (next to Procede unit for scale):

Well I'm looking forward to see what goodies come out for this motor

Matt, I don't mean to be o/t, but what aftermarket intercoolers can work with the N55 currently? I'm desperately looking for one because of the ridiculously hot temps here in south FL.
I can answer that question partially... I went to helix earlier this week, and the FMIC they have now, won't work with the N55 platform. Not only is the piping different, but the spacing is also a little different. They are interested in getting a E9x for measurements and the such.

Matt, do you know the part number off the E9x Stock FMIC? I' want to compare that to the X5, and see if it's the same, because if they are, this also means that any FMIC that is produced for the E9x N55's will work for the X5 & probably any other N55 powered BMW

but if they are the same, will there be enough room behind the bumper on the x5?

I will get the car back next week to have a look. From what it looks like, the HPF intercooler might just clip right in...but dont hold me to that.

Taking off the intake manifold is not really hard for me to do. If I have to drill and tap it, then so it will be.

Wow...Matt you said it looks to have enough room for the HPF intercooler to clip right in meaning that there is enough clearance without trimming or are you describing the OEM couplings attachment?? Shit I had to trim about 4 inches of plastics to fit the HPF intercooler into place..

BTW...Matt you definitely the man with the master plan...I like the R&D that your doing...

i think with the OEM N55 exhaust cut the mid silencer and that should
make the OEM exhaust sound amazing.
or maybe add electronic cutouts there.

The N55 X5 is already running a 3" pipe, so I can see 4" as a possible exhaust option on any N55 engine... Just not sure if it will be a positive mod or negative mod... Exhaust experts could chime in on this...

Well if we upgrade the turbo in this thing to a bigger turbine wheel and compressor wheel instead of just clipping it, this engine should have some vast power behind it.

I hope we can achieve the power levels of the Supra and the Skyline with this engine.

yeah I dont like that design.

If you need to service or replace the turbo you have to remove the entire assembly. Unless they performed some magic, all the exhaust mani studs/nuts will be a PITA to reach with the engine in the car.

I can have the exhaust system out, engine drained of oil and turbo on the bench in just under and hour on my e36....and that car wasnt designed with a turbo in mind. Thats much easier to deal with. Hell, if it was a top mount it would be even quicker.

oh well.....time for someone to make a new tubular twin scroll exhaust mani w a vband setup so a Tial vband exhaust housing can be used w a hta 35r.

ready...set....go

May I ask where you got these pages from? They look like they come from a document that's similar to the one that's in the stickied thread titled, "2007 Engine Tech: How the N54 works (must read!!!)". I'd love to see a sticky like that but for the N55.

Less backpressure will give faster spool, better wastegate control/flow, and less stress on the turbine outlet.

A single tube exhaust would get rid of pretty much all the restrictive fittings in the exhaust. It would look a little weird on the back of a 335i with two exhaust cut outs but I think it would be the best performance option. Fitting it under the car might also be tricky

By far, the biggest gain will be deleting that cat.

Lets just say it significantly reduced the workload in retooling the CNC machine for new flanges...as in, needs no modification

So I wonder why they split the down pipe, wouldn't it be better to do a single 3" (or bigger) piping all the way to the back and then split it there?
